Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and dimed: On (not) getting by in America. Henry Holt
and Company.
In this book of nonfiction based on the journalist’s experiential research, Ehrenreich attempts to ascertain whether it is currently possible for an individual to live on a minimum-wage in America. Taking jobs as a waitress, a maid in a cleaning service, and a Walmart sales employee, the author summarizes and reflects on her work, her relationships with fellow workers, and her financial struggles in each situation.
Waite, L. J., Goldschneider, F. K., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of
traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51, 541-554.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.

Read each of the following research questions (RQ) carefully and select one that you have a vested interest in. Thereafter, search for no more or less than seven articles by seven different authors that will help you answer the RQ you have selected. Then, read these articles and write an annotated bibliography (AB). These articles, in addition, must be relevant to your research question in terms of both its title and content, and they must be reliable sources of which two must be scholarly or peer reviewed. Be sure that each or your bibliographical entries has the necessary information, including titles, authors, and dates.

Here now art the RQ:

1. Has racial integration proven to be a good or bad thing for one’s ethnicity?

2. Should smoking be entirely illegal?

3. Given the vows that couples freely and willingly take, especially “for better or worse till death do [them] part,” should divorce be illegal?

4. With respect to this recent general election and understanding the significance of how elected officials have the enormous ability to impact our lives for the better or worse, should voting be obligatory in the US in picking our legislative representatives?

5. What is the best form of renewable energy?

6. It so happens that those CEOs or managers or business owners who earn millions from the businesses they run are the more vocal against increasing the minimum wage to, say, $15 an hour. Some can and do earn in one year what some people could earn in their lives. Against this backdrop, should there be a maximum wage limit for those employed high wage earners?

7. Is college worth the financial cost one must incur to earn a college degree, especially an undergraduate?

8. Is there something called “white privilege” that affords more opportunities to Whites than those of other ethnicities, especially Blacks and Hispanics?

9. In one’s match to a future career, should one focus on the personal fulfillment one receives in doing her or his work or the amount of money one earns?

10. Should there be term limits for members of Congress?

*The AB assignment is the first of three of them. The next one will be the “Statement of the Problem” (SP) that will end with writing the argument in answering the RQ.
