TASK 1 (obligatory)
Reflect on the following scenarios in a minimum of 350 words. Do not use any external resources (except for the
notes in class and your reading experience for our sessions) while completing the exercise. Its content and language use
will be evaluated based on the incorporation of ideas covered in class and your subjective thoughts, ideas, and
recommendations.
• French painter Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) gave up his job as a banker and abandoned his
wife and children to pursue a cereer as an artist. He moved to Martinique and later to Tahiti,
eventually becoming one of the most famous postimpressionist artists in the world. Did he
do what was morally permissible?
• Siddhartha Gautama, appalled by the tremendous and pervasive suffering in the world,
abandoned his wife and child to seek enlightenment. He eventually attained enlightenment
and became known as the Buddha. Is there a moral difference between Gauguin and the
Buddha?
TASK 2 (obligatorily elective)
Reflect on one of the following questions of your own preference in a minimum of 350 words. Follow the same
instructions as indicated above.
1. Shall we aim at happiness or at knowledge, virtue, or the creation of beautiful objects?
2. If we choose happiness, will it be our own or the happiness of all?
3. And what of the more particular questions that face us: is it right to be dishonest in a good
cause?
4. Can we justify living in opulence while elsewhere in the world people are starving?
5. Is going to war justified in cases where it is likely that innocent people will be killed?
6. Is it wrong to clone a human being or to destroy human embryos in medical research?
7. What are our obligations, if any, to the generations of humans who will come after us and
to the nonhuman animals with whom we share the planet?
