The Ronald McDonald House in Macon Georgia
Explain your interest in this particular not-for-profit organization and your rationale for selecting it for your final project.
Being a NICU nurse these types of families are important to me. They need a place close to the hospital to stay and so that they can stay close to their families.
II. Mission: Why does this not-for-profit organization exist? Who does it serve? What is its formal mission statement?
This organization exists because they believe that home is any place where families are together. We believe that healing happens over laughter and bedtime stories. We believe that an island of refuge in a sea of chaos is as powerful as any medicine. We believe in keeping families together.
The facility serves the families of those children who are ill or in fragile state at the hospital.
Mission: It is the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Georgia to provide care and support for families of seriously ill, critically injured or medically fragile children being treated at area medical facilities.
III. History: Provide a history of the not-for-profit organization. When was it founded? By whom was it founded? How long has it been in existence? What are some milestones related to its growth?
When Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill’s 3-year-old daughter, Kim, was being treated for leukemia in 1974, his life changed. He and his wife, Fran, camped out on hospital benches and sat in cramped waiting rooms during Kim’s three years of treatment. The Hills watched other parents and families of seriously ill children do the same thing. Many of the families had to travel long distances for their children to receive medical treatment and couldn’t afford hotel rooms.
The Hills knew there had to be a solution. Fred rallied the support of his teammates to raise funds. Through Jim Murray, the Eagles’ general manager, the team offered its support to Dr. Audrey Evans, head of the pediatric oncology unit at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Evans dreamed of a comfortable temporary residence for families of children being treated at her hospital.
Jim enlisted Don Tuckerman from the local McDonald’s advertising agency, who with the support of McDonald’s Regional Manager Ed Rensi, launched the St. Patrick’s Day Green Milkshake (dubbed the Shamrock Shake) promotion. Funds raised helped buy an old house located near the hospital, which was opened in 1974 as the first Ronald McDonald House©. Fast forward 43 years and we now have more than 366 Ronald McDonald Houses© that serve more than 7200 families a night around the world. We operate 215 Family Room programs in 23 countries and regions. There are 50 Care Mobile programs providing pediatric and dental services in 9 countries and regions.
Because of the Ronald McDonald House© program’s success and the realization to fulfill needs not met by the House, Ronald McDonald House Charities© (RMHC©) began the Ronald McDonald Family Room© in 1992 and soon after in 2000, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile©. All three programs are the core of RMHC’s mission to find, create and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children and families. Ronald McDonald House Charities© of the Coastal Empire is proud to operate all three core programs.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Georgia provides care and comfort for the families of seriously ill, critically injured or medically fragile children being treated at area medical facilities. We strive to strengthen families by keeping them close in times of medical need and crisis.Since opening in 2002, we have provided comfortable beds, warm meals, hot showers, laundry facilities, internet access, and emotional support to over 7,500 families. When we opened our doors, we opened our hearts as well.
Milestones: the facility is currently under construction to expand from 13 rooms to 30 rooms.
IV. Current Position: How many offices and locations does the not-for-profit organization serve? What is the profile of the people it serves? What is the nature of the cause it was created to support?
This location is the only location in Macon. There are 6 locations in Georgia. This location serves Central and South Georgia. The people it serves come from all walks of life. There is no specific profile. Anyone who had a child in the hospital is welcome to stay at the Ronald McDonald House.
