Primary Care and Public Health

Health is the completeness of the physical, mental, and social well

–

being of an individual.

Public health can therefore be

described as the health of the population which is subject to

government regulation and support. In this sector, there is the need to consider many factors that hinder its development. Some of these factors include leadership, management, prevention, and control of various diseases, among others. This paper aims at discussing the prevention and control of various diseases as a central problem in the health sector.

Prevention in health can be defined as the act of stopping a certain disease or infection from reaching the population in a certain society. On the other hand, control can be defined as the act of determining the existence of a certain problem/disease and providing measures that will hinder it from spreading. According to Erwin & Brownson (2017), the prevention and control of certain diseases/infections have been a major problem in the health sector. For instance, the prevention and control of infectious and chronic diseases have been a great challenge in the health sector.

Scientists have played a great role in trying to examine the sources of different infectious and chronic diseases. Due to their increased efforts in prevention and control of certain diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, HIV/AIDs among others, they have discovered that the major causes of these diseases are microorganisms that are not visible without the use of the necessary tools such as the microscope. Therefore, they have realized that due to the invisibility of these microorganisms, there is the existence of many infectious and chronic diseases that are passed from one person to the other. Having known the sources of different infectious and chronic diseases is not just enough. The greatest challenge is on preventing and controlling these diseases.

Prevention and control of diseases is an important measure in the health sector because it helps to control unforeseen risks of different diseases. These risks include massive deaths, permanent disability, loss of funds in treatment processes, among others. According to Selgelid (2016), the prevention and control measures include immunization, vaccination, disease screening, and surveillance, among others. These measures help in controlling the infections of the disease and preventing those who are not affected from being infected.

Prevention and control of various diseases through vaccination or immunization is very vital in ensuring good public health in any society. For instance, if the vaccination against a certain disease is suddenly stopped, that disease vaccinated against will immediately come back. Therefore, vaccination is one of the major prevention measures that should be taken seriously in the case or before the emergence of a disease. More so, immunization is another common and important way of controlling the spread and the emergence of these diseases.

In our current society, there is the emergence of many infectious and chronic diseases. For instance, there is the current strain caused by the emergence of COVID-19. This disease has proved that our health departments are not fully equipped to prevent and control emerging diseases. Therefore, the respective governments should take immediate actions in developing prevention and control strategies that shall be used when an infectious or a chronic disease emerges. Failure to develop such prevention and control strategies will lead to massive deaths of the population, loss of funds through treatment processes, the poor economy in different societies, among others. It is therefore especially important to take immediate actions in supporting the prevention and control departments in the health sectors. These departments will always help to keep our societies alert in case of the emergence of a disease.

There are many ways of supporting public health in different societies. According to Erwin & Brownson (2017), the provision of a public health act in the constitution of every country is vital in ensuring good health. More so, the provision of disease control departments is also a good strategy in ensuring the stability of public health. Failure to have centers for disease control and prevention will always lead to the increased number of patients in the health centers thus making it difficult to control the existing and the upcoming diseases. It is also important to have health programs that will help in creating awareness to the public on how to boost their immunity.

Evidence-Based public health is the way through which programs and policies in public health are developed, evaluated, and implemented. This format normally uses principles of scientific reasoning in ensuring that public health is fully achieved. According to Brownson et al (2017)., Evidence-based public health helps in the prevention and control of diseases through collection, interpretation, and analysis of health information through public surveillance which is a necessary tool in determining the existence of a certain disease. Other advantages of this tool include health impact assessment and economic evaluation. Therefore, using this tool in the prevention and control of diseases that can threaten public health is especially important.

In conclusion, the health sectors in every country should strive to support the centers for disease control and prevention by providing them with the required personnel. This will help this department to conduct its duties effectively in the assurance of the protection of public health. Furthermore, the respective government should ensure that the public health acts are observed thus safeguarding the lives of the public. This should also be done through the provision of adequate healthcare to all members of the respective country.
