Guidance for writing multiple-choice Q3 & Q4
Hi Scholar,
This guidance is for your multiple choice questions 3 and 4 (Q3 & Q4). You’ll need to
use two files from D2L course content:
This file you’re reading now (a file)
A Word file called Example_MC_Q x. You’ll fill in the green-colored
spaces of that file, once for Q3 and again for Q4, saving the file each time.
When you save it, use new filenames as I describe below. Thank you – this
makes it a whole lot easier for us to track who’s turned in what.
Write your questions based on Myers & Twenge chapter objectives from D2L course
content. For Q3 and Q4, use chapter objectives from chapters 6, 9, and/or 7. In real
life as you know our exams cover more than the text but this particular assignment is
only on the text. The reason is simply that, in the past, class members’ questions have
been stronger and so earned more points when based on chapter objectives.
What you turn in has to be original work written only by you, yourself. For this
assignment (only), you don’t need to put quote marks around quotations from the text
but you do need to tell us the Myers & Twenge page number(s) to document the correct
answer.
When you write your A-B-C-D answers for a question, avoid creating items that are
“none of the above” or “all of the above,” or “true/false.” Sometimes those can be great
test items in real life, but you’ll learn more by writing four real answers. Similarly, avoid
answers like “both A and B but not C.”
Save each multiple choice question to its own Microsoft Word file. This has to be a
Word file with suffix either or x. If your file gets uploaded in some other format,
your work will be late until it’s in the correct format. We’re unable to give class
members a heads-up about incorrect file formats or other problems with files
before we grade the work.
Name your files like this:
YourLastName_MC_Qx x
— for instance if your name is Rihanna Fenty, your files for Q3 & Q4 will be
Fenty_MC_Q3 x
Fenty_MC_Q4 x
Upload your questions 1 & 2 to D2L ACTIVITIES ASSIGNMENTS before 2pm on the
deadline. We’ll ding late papers for points, for example, dinging one point as of 2:01
https://portlandstate.atlassian.net/servicedesk/customer/portal/2/article/44721066
pm on the deadline and continuing another point each 2:01 pm after that. We want you
to earn all the points you can, so please start early and turn in your questions before the
deadline.
We’ll grade on a points framework:
5 points (this is like an A; 5 out of 5 points toward the 200-point max for the whole course)
4 points are like a B
3 points are like a C
— and so on.
We hope we get to assign a lot of 4’s and 5’s. A good solid DEFINITION-OF-A-TERM question
that is accurate, follows the guidance, and comes in on time is likely to earn 4 points. A
solid question doing more than the above, such as it APPLIES A CONCEPT WITH AN ACCURATE
EXAMPLE, is likely to earn 5 points.
Writing lots of test questions can help a scholar master new material. The first one or
two are the hardest to write, because you’re practicing not only to review information but
to retrieve it. Learning is the goal and I hope you find this assignment enhances your
learning. Start early, and talk with either of the TAs or me if you get stuck!
