How would you define the role of

primary

care from the perspectives of health promotion

and

health protection

?

The way I would define the role of primary care from the perspectives of health promotion and

health protection is by Health promotion seeks to improve the level of health in a population by

preventing diseases, controlling hazards, improving fitness and w

ell being and enhancing the

capacity or workers to work and to function in society. Health promotion activities are generally

divided into education,

health protection

(protecting the worker from hazards and ensuring

prompt intervention if something goes w

rong) and prevention of disease. Prevention, in turn, is

often divided into

primary prevention

(the prevention of disease in the first place, for example

through clean water or immunization against infectious disease),

secondary prevention

(the early

detec

tion of disease at a stage when it can be treated or limited, through periodic health

surveillance) and

tertiary prevention

(prevention of disability, for example by providing

rehabilitation services after an injury). The workplace is an excellent place to

promote health, to

the benefit of all society

(Mendes & Dias, 2021)

Why are these facets of primary care important, and how do they influence the business of

healthcare?

Establishing a more rational basis for referrals and improving the coordination bet

ween primary

care and specialist physicians would make primary care practice more challenging and

intellectually rewarding.

States could encourage a better distribution of physicians (both primary

care and specialists) by tailoring their licensing policie

s to health needs in different areas or by

providing financial incentives for practicing in underserved areas, as is done in some other

countries.

Incentives for training primary care practitioners could be improved by reorienting

federal support for grad

uate medical education toward training primary care

physicians.

Similarly, loan forgiveness for primary care practitioners could be

expanded.

Reducing the amount of paperwork needed to file claims and encouraging the

creation of electronic medical record

s would greatly reduce the tedium of record keeping in

practice and, at the same time, make time to improve the self

monitoring of the quality of care.

care (PHC) is on essential part of

health care and its main principles are equity, health promotion and disease prevention,

community participation, appropriate health technology and multisectoral approach.

  primary

care includes being a patient’s main poi

system as well as health education, health counseling, disease prevention and the identification

of and differentiation of various illnesses.

understanding of the implications and approaches to health promotion and public health. Typical activities for health promotion, disease prevention, and wellness programs include: Communication: Raising awareness about healthy behaviors for the general public. Examples of communication strategies include public service announcements, health fairs, mass media campaigns, and newsletters

Health Protection is a term used to encompass a set of activities within public health. It is defined as protecting individual, groups and populations from single cases of infectious disease, incidents and outbreaks, and non-infectious environmental hazards such as chemicals and radiation. A good example of health protection is the regular testing of soil where farmers grow produce or raise items for consumption.

Health promotion seeks to improve the level of health in our population by preventing diseases, controlling hazards, improving fitness, well being and enhancing the ability to function in society. Health promotion is generally divided into education, health protection and prevention of diseases. In many settings, primary care, which is the first contact of people with health services that are continuous, comprehensive and coordinated has been focused on treating illness when it arises rather than preventing disease in the first place. This type of thinking is being phased out with modern health interventions that are aiming to prevent disease, protect and promote health and ensure the greatest threats to population health are addressed. By integrating a public health approach into primary care it could be an effective way of preventing disease in local communities thus reducing the demand on primary care and improving the health of the population. This would have to start by making changes in our health care system where doctors are more inclined to practice preventive care rather than reactive care. Most of us seek care until we are sick but we have never been taught or has it been promoted by our primary care doctors to practice preventive methods of taking care of our health before we get sick.

Telehealth has been a newer development in the last 10 or so years, but due to COVID-19 the convenience and accessibility within telehealth has skyrocketed. In March of 2020, COVID-19 hit the United States and suddenly going in to see a physician became discouraged unless you needed immediate or life-saving care (MDLinx). In order to combat both the spread of COVID-19 and the usual patient visits that would have taken place, state and federal regulators made some alterations so telehealth would be a viable option throughout the looming pandemic (MDLinx). One of the biggest advancements in this telehealth system has been creating systems like chat, video, email etc. that all communicate with one another, so all of this information can be stored in one place (Healthcare). Telemedicine has definitely emerged at the right time, especially with the audience in which it is serving (Healthcare). Millennials and those who are tech-savy have really taken to telehealth as it is more convenient and safe for all to use (Healthcare). The business of healthcare really allowed this to happen because it became acceptable to bill for telehealth visits just like they would bill for normal visits. Telehealth visits were added in as something that was acceptable for patients and physicians to use without breaking any rules or regulations. It still keeps both the patient and the physician safe in the process of the appointment. Telehealth has become a huge help all over the country and the world because it allows both parties to be and stay safe behind their screens.

I chose a technology that is close to my personal family. One of my family members a few years ago was diagnosed with bradycardia, which is a slow heartbeat. A little device known as a pacemaker gave him back his health and improved his quality of life dramatically. Recently new advacnes in this technology has created leadless pacemakers to the point where it is becoming less invasive and less maintenance when having to replace a new device. I ran into an article that gave me curiosity of how Medtronic is using technology that we have now grown accustomed to using in our daily life. We use out phones for almost everything now, from controlling the temperature in our house when we are away, to monitoring our home, to starting our cars and well and abundance of many other things. Normally a person with a pacemaker would have to go into the doctors office to get an interrogation on his/her device, sit there and explain his/her symptoms. Now with this technology all that can be done via an app and your phone. People are starting to get more control over their health and this in my opinion is great for everyone because it reduces the amount of time need in clinic and that time can be allocated to someone with an emergency. It is pretty nice to have your health in your finger tips and the ability to communicate with your doctor immediately if something does not feel right. I can probably write a paper on this wonderful technology. Medtronics is business driven of course and with their inventions it is a win win for medical professionals, patients and Medtronics themselves.

Telemedicine as a New Technological Healthcare Reality

In a technologically driven world, it’s thought that as many as 60% of customers prefer digitally-led services. Telehealth describes a quickly developing technology that allows patients to receive medical care through their digital devices, instead of waiting for face-to-face appointments with their doctor. For example, mobile apps are being developed which allow patients to speak virtually with physicians and other medical professionals to receive an instant diagnosis and medical advice.

With oversubscribed services, telehealth gives patients different access points to healthcare when and where they need it. It is particularly useful for patients managing chronic conditions as it provides them with consistent, convenient, and cost-effective care. The global telemedicine market is expected to be worth $113.1 billion by 2025.
