I had difficulty with this discussion question. I gave it my best shot. Sorry about that. When it comes to abuse, the risk can be greatest when the functioning of the children and parents is limited as well as constrained by developmental problems. Children with a disability as well as social or an emotional handicap, they too can be at a risk for abuse. Parents who are stressed are at a risk for abusing their children. There must be cultural justification when it comes to force against children. I guess a way to help minimize the impact of dysfunction in families is take responsibility for your life as well as your feelings. Then let others take responsibility for their lives as well as their feelings. You should employ boundaries as well as respect others boundaries. An example would be when one or even both of the parents have an addiction or even a compulsion and these could have a strong influence on the family members.

Our text states; “Violence is pervasive in families around the world and different types of violence tend to co-occur. If someone is abusing animals, it is likely that children, intimate partners, or elders might also be at risk. Family violence occurs in all ethnic groups, all social classes, and in heterosexual and same-sex couples.” (T. R. Howe, 2018). To prevent violence from occurring, one must be able to identify behaviors that are acted out prior to the violence, and hopefully the acts themselves can be stopped. Being present with one’s family is a good way to prevent these behaviors, raising children and making sure to not only take care of their basic needs, such as food, shelter and clothing, but also being available to tend to their emotional needs. Having open communication within a family and seeking professional therapy or counseling when issues become too big to deal with can also help to prevent dysfunction.

Julie
