Capacities of Leadership

Being an evolving industry, health care is reinforced by essential competencies. The competencies are important as they ensure that a good foundation is built for leadership in the various health care systems. Health care institutions should ensure that competencies are incorporated in training to ensure that the objectives of the institutions are met. One of the major competencies that an administrator in a health care institution should possess is analytical skills. Administrators should also have the capacity to develop policies that propel their respective organizations to succeed. Another quality that administrators should have is good communication skills. Hospital administrators should also possess good management skills and should be able to allocate income effectively in every department of their organization.

Dealing with complex issues is a part of the daily life of a hospital administrator. The administrators have been given the responsibility of introducing new concepts and beliefs in their respective health care organizations to ensure that patient outcomes improve significantly (Slipicevic and Masic, 2012). Hospital administrators possess analytical skills that are considered to be essential. Having analytical skills will make it possible for the administrator to make sensible decisions that benefit the organization (The Council on Linkages, 2014). Analytical skills will also make it possible for hospital administrators to calibrate data concerning the health of the community. The success of every health care organization largely depends on the policies that have been put into practice. A successful administrator can be flexible and ready to change their strategies as change is the only constant element of life. Successful policies are usually oriented around providing quality health care to the patients, providing opportunities for the staff to get further training, and ensuring that the organization can generate income to keep it running (National Research Council, 2011). Every member of the health care organization will be able to handle issues that occur when they carry out their day-to-day activities using the policies. While developing the policies, the management should ensure that the policy is realistic as it can be put into practice in their respective health care organization.

Communication is considered to be another essential skill that administrators should possess. To successfully make the patients to be satisfied with the health care service that they receive, good communication plays a significant role (Tulsky et al., 2017). Communication should be successfully created between the clients, who are the patients, and all the health care providers. Communication also plays a significant role in ensuring that the policy implementation process is successful. Hospital administrators should prepare every member of their organization before implementing any new policy. Through effective communication, transitioning into new policies will be made successful as every member of the organization will be prepared psychologically for the process. Administrators should not only communicate but also lead by example for the junior members to model from. Administrators should ensure that the passing of information is effective. To ensure efficiency, administrators can pass important information through verbal and written methods. Efficiency can also be successful by ensuring that the information has reached every member of staff in the health care organization. Administrators are supposed to ensure that the members of staff fully understand the information provided to them.

Cultural competency is another important quality that administrators should possess. One of the major aims of health care is to ensure that quality services are provided to people of all races, people with different financial capabilities, and people from different religions. Therefore, administrators should develop cultures that embrace diversity. Cultural competency is vital as it ensures that every individual in and out of the organization feels comfortable with the organization (Dreachslin et al., 2012). A culturally competent administrator should be able to introduce diversity in their organization and ensure that it is successfully implemented. Administrators should also ensure that every member of their organization understands why cultural competency is important.

Great administrators should also possess skills in financial planning and management. For an administrator to plan perfectly on how finances should be distributed across every department, they are supposed to be conversant with new trends in the health care industry. Financial planning plays a significant role in ensuring that administrators can make good decisions when it comes to finances (Young & Guo, 2020). Through financial planning, administrators will be able to deliver health care services that are cost-effective. By employing financial planning, administrators can make budgets so that all activities run smoothly in the organization. Administrators can also employ financial planning in analyzing how the finances have been utilized.

Gap Analysis

Leaders who possess analytical skills have the potential of improving the productivity of their organizations. Therefore, the various leaders in health care departments should possess analytical skills so to successfully meet the objectives of their organizations. Analytical skills will play a significant role when health care organizations partner with other health care providers such as rehabilitation centers.

Health care organizations will successfully set their goals during the process of policy development. Having proper policies is a step in ensuring that patients can get access to quality health care services. Our health care office has realized that there are gaps when implementing new policies. A significant percentage of our clients are in nursing homes, therefore, there has been a challenge when it comes to following the policies set by our health care facility and those set by the nursing home. Trying to meet both policies has been difficult especially when it comes to making important decisions. To solve the challenge, we have had a meeting with the leaders from the two facilities and suggested that new policies should be developed to meet the needs of both partner facilities. Another challenge that our office has faced comes in communication. As we are dealing with two facilities, there are instances where clear communication has not been successful. It is important to note that whenever there is a lack of understanding, communication breakdown will be experienced. Communication breakdown will negatively affect the quality of care given to the patients. Poor communication has been solved by the two facilities through organizing meetings.

With health care evolving every day, improving cultural competency is our core objective. We can offer services to patients coming from different races, different religions, and with different financial capabilities. We have also ensured that the patients are comfortable while interacting with our staff. When recruiting our staff, we ensure that diversity is employed and make sure that every individual that has been employed by any of our facilities understands the importance of cultural competency.

To ensure the smooth running of health care organizations, financial planning skills, and management skills are important. Therefore, to ensure that the organization does not experience financial difficulties, leaders should be able to make budgets to give a direction on how finances are to be managed. We implemented the use of technology in all the departments to ensure that there is accountability. It is encouraging as most of the members have smoothly transitioned to the new norm.
