Tonle is a zero-waste fashion brand that finds discarded and unwanted fabrics and reclaims them turning them into fashionable yet ethically sourced and produced garments. At its core, Tonle claims to value justice and aims to apply and reinforce this tenet within the fashion world in a few key areas. One of which is the current “top-down supply chain” of the Fashion Industry that has “an unfair balance of risk and reward” where those at the top become extremely wealthy by exploiting those at the bottom. Tonel aims to combat the top-down supply chain with the idea of a more “circular and reciprocal ecosystem.” RatherTheir assembly lines, rather than follow the fashion industry’s norms, their assembly lines Rather, their assembly lines operate more like sewing circles where there’s a significant emphasis on skill-sharing. Each team member no matter their expertise, learns first hand the full process of making each garment. Within this ecosystem, every aid or contribution is valued, and makers are not only that, but they are creators and become centered as leaders and teachers. Tonel sources its materials from discarded textiles of “other larger factories” and turns textiles once headed for landfills and incinerators into impressive garments and homewares.
And in order to ensure these repurposed fabrics stay out of landfills for as long as possible, the brand strives “to create designs that transcend seasonality” as well as to maximize wearability of the garments; they educate customers on the best care instructions for their particular garments. Another thing they are doing to combat clothing ending up in landfills is that they are working on a resale platform where customers can sell and trade Tonel items. In order to fulfill their goal of being Zero Waste and lightening fashions footprint, Tonel takes both the approaches of “ pattern making that uses 100% of a given textile, and creating garments from reclaimed materials” and marries the two. They source pre-consumer textile waste from the remnant markets of larger garment factories in Phnom Penh, Cambodia then at their sewing workshops “makers and designers work together to create designs from the larger pieces of reclaimed fabric” while the small scraps leftover are cut and turned into yarn and that yarn is then hand woven and knit into new pieces. A step is taken even further where the amount of textile waste from garment making is mixed with used paper from Tonels office and patter making to create their own handmade paper. Tonel has aslo implimented their zero waste inattentive throghout their garment making process from fabric selection ,cutting, handweaving, screen printing and painting, hand -kintting and natural dye and ect. In all tonle is brand built on a community that prioritizers Honesty, Reciprocity and inclusivity within the fashion industry and have made it their mission to transfrom the wasteful industry into a more sustainable and ethical lifestyle.
