Course Project: Online Technology Conference
The final project is a presentation for an imaginary technology conference called in order to evaluate the impact of technology on culture. Students will pose questions of cultural concern in regard to new or emerging technologies and answer these questions in a multimedia presentation that uses scholarly research. The project will be completed in stages throughout the course and shared with the class in the final week. Students choose a new or emerging technology and ask the following questions about it (from Neil Postman, Building a Bridge to the Eighteenth Century):
1.
What is the problem for which this technology is the solution?
2. Whose problem is it?
3. Which people and what institutions might be most seriously harmed by a technological solution?
4. What new problems might be created because we have solved this problem?
5. What sort of people and institutions might acquire special economic and political power because of technological change?
6. What changes in human communication are being enforced by new technologies, and what is being gained and lost by such changes?
Students answer these questions by doing research in the UMGC library. At least six scholarly sources must be employed to answer the questions.
Your exhibit will consist of a multimedia presentation on a particular technology and its relationship to culture. The exhibit will address the following issues regarding technology and culture:

PROJECT OUTLINE 1
PROJECT OUTLINE 5
Project Outline
The following is the list of things that I will keep in mind in my project in regard to the six questions from the postman. This is on technology advancement and the role which it has played in the life of most people since in one way or another they have interacted with at least one type of technology in their daily lives.
There are many positive and negative impacts that technology advancement has brought.
The technological advancement chosen
The technological advancement which I have chosen is social media. This is an area that involves sharing of thoughts, ideas, and information and this has brought the creation of many virtual communities globally. The reason why I chose this technological advancement is that it has been widely accepted and adopted. So many people in one way or another interact with social media platforms almost every minute. There are many social media platforms and they include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and many others. Learning has become very easy as a result of this, (Anderson, et al, 2018).
The six questions which I am going to discuss are
1. What is the problem for which this technology is the solution?
· Connectivity issue; many people want to be connected and this has brought a lot of learning from each other in a very easy way.
2. Whose problem is it?
· Lack of connectivity yet people would like to know what is happening in other parts of the world.
3. Which people and what institutions might be most seriously harmed by a technological solution?
· Media institutions; this is because people will not be relying on such media houses to get information but they can get it from social media platforms.
4. What new problems might be created because we have solved this problem?
· Addiction to social media
· Spreading of fake news
5. What sort of people and institutions might acquire special economic and political power because of technological change?
· Companies that deal with manufacturing and selling of those devices which are used in accessing social media platforms.
6. What language changes are being enforced by new technologies, and what is being gained and lost by such changes?
· English; this has made most of the people forget their native language since they are communicating in a way that will be understood by many people, (Hjorth & Hinton, 2019).
Steps in answering the questions
· Consideration of the technology which I have chosen; in this case, I chose social media because a very high percentage of the people nowadays are very familiar with these platforms.
· Benefits of using the technological advancement; the advantage is that people are in a position to connect so easily with people who are in different parts of the world. This is making learning to be very easy for people.
· Challenges of using the technological advancement; this is that people are spending most of their time online and some have become very lazy, high instances of some institutions are closed and the likelihood of forgetting the native languages since this means using English in most of the times.
Obstacles encountered
· Some of the questions have not specified whether one should answer the question based on the technology which has been selected or it is supposed to be all technology in general. I decided that I will base all my answers on the technology which I have chosen.

Running Head: TECHNOLOGY 1
TECHNOLOGY 2
Technology
Technology
1. What is it?
Social media- It is a technology that is computer-based and which allows people to build virtual networks and communities where they can share information, ideas, and thoughts (Hjorth & Hinton, 2019).
2. Why did you choose it?
I chose this technology because it has been widely adopted. Despite the many challenges that are associated with it, many people are already using various social media platforms.
3. At this point, very briefly state what you think the answers to the six questions below will be. Why?
a. What is the problem for which this technology is the solution?
This technology solves the problem of connectivity. It allows people to connect virtually with people around the world. This way, people know what is happening around the world in the shortest time possible (Hjorth & Hinton, 2019).
b. Whose problem is it?
The problem of connectivity is a problem that affects all people around the world. This is because we all want to connect with others and know what is happening around us.
c. Which people and what institutions might be most seriously harmed by a technological solution?
This technological solution is likely to harm media institutions because people will no longer depend on them to get information. It will be difficult for media institutions to inform people because people will have multiple sources of information.
d. What new problems might be created because we have solved this problem?
After solving the problem of connectivity, social media might create the problem of addiction to social media. It can also facilitate the spreading of false news due to inadequate restrictions in social media (Anderson & Jiang, 2018).
e. What sort of people and institutions might acquire special economic and political power because of technological change?
Companies that manufacture and sell technological devices are most likely to benefit from technological changes. Also, those that offer internet-related services like Google might benefit economically.
f. What language changes are being enforced by new technologies and what is being gained and lost by such changes?
The connectivity created by technology is forcing people to use the languages that are understood by many, for example, English. Through this, people are gaining mastery of these languages. However, they are losing the mastery of their native languages.
4. What steps will you take to answer the questions?
To answer these questions, I will consider the technology I have chosen and the trends in its usage. I will also consider the benefits and challenges of its usage. Doing so will enable me to answer all these questions.
5. What obstacles (if any) do you see in your way to answering the questions?
One obstacle I see is that some of the questions do not specify if the reference is on the technology I chose or technology in general. It will therefore be difficult to establish the most appropriate answer for such a question.
