1.What is involved in project scope management and why is good project scope management so important on information technology projects?

Good project scope management is important on IT projects, to ensure that stakeholders and the project team have same understanding of the project deliverables and the processes that will be used by the project team to produce the products or services.

Project scope management is a process of defining and maintaining the work of a project.

There are five processes under project scope management, namely;

Scope Planning: Scope planning involves collecting requirement defining scope, verifying it and documenting it.

Scope defining: Scope definition involves reviewing the project charter, requirement document etc.

Creating Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Creating work breakdown structure (WBS) involves dividing the work into different modules and assigning it to different project members or teams.

Scope Verification: Scope verification involves formal acceptance of the scope.

Scope Control: This involves the change control in the project scope.

1b. Importance of project scope management:

Project manager should understand scope of the project. Scope is the work required to be done to complete a project. Considering the scope, project managers try to attain deliverables. Deliverables could be products, documents which are related to project completion. The project manager should identify the correct deliverables for making a successful project. Ultimately, the stakeholders should get satisfied by the working of deliverables, only then the project is successful.

2. Discuss the process of further defining project scope, going from information in a project charter to preliminary scope statement, project scope statement, WBS etc

Scope and Time Management:

Scope refers to all the work that is usually involved in creation of products of the project inclusion of the processes that are used creating the products. The project scope involves various processes that define and control what should be included and excluded in the project. The project scope statement should provide details about description of the product scope, project deliverables such as software, and user acceptance of the product. This statement helps in the documentation of product description, assumptions, and boundaries and constrains of the project, (Schwalbe, 2016). The entire scope of the project is defined by the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS). WBS aids the planning process and overall management of costs, schedules, changes and resources in the project. Each item in the WBS with comprehensive information is defined by WBS dictionary. Scope validation provides verification to deliverables of the project. The scope of a project becomes specific and clear as time goes by.

3. Please provide a short reflection on why Scope and Time Management is important during project lifecycle. What impacts you may have if either one of them increases?

Scope management is important because it ensures that the scope of the project is clearly defined to enhance proper allocation of resources, costs and schedules to the project. The goals and deadlines of a project which shape the project are enhanced by scope management. Time management is significant because it helps in planning and organizing time schedules assigned to complete the projects, (Monnappa, 2017).If time increases the project manager is likely to experience frustrations because time is money and the costs and overall scope of the project will be affected. Time serves as a constraint to project completion when it’s increased. The absence of project scope management can make project managers to lack the knowledge on what should be done and the cost to incur, (Nath & Momin, 2016). However, problems with scope can be avoided by adapting good project management process.
