Share Your Peer Reviewed Study

Action research is a form of inquiry in which a problem is identified and a series of actions are planned as a way of gaining deeper understanding of the range of possible solutions. The purpose of this discussion is to promote reciprocal sharing of the study you reviewed with others in your community of practice (your peers in this course) who would value the knowledge you have gained through the peer review process of the study.

There are two parts to this discussion.

Share the process and results of the action research study. At a minimum:

• Describe the purpose of the study by writing a statement that completes the following sentence, “The purpose of this study was to…” (two to three sentences).
• Post the research question(s) – Include definitions of key technical terms, if necessary (one to three sentences).
• Outcomes/Results or the “so what?” of the study – Answers to the research questions. (three to four sentences)
• Assuming you would conduct another cycle of this study, what specific modifications or adjustments would you make, and why? (three to four sentences)
• Explain why this study is important for teachers and other educational practitioners to read about. (two to three sentences)

Action Research Area of Focus

Professional Role and Setting

My professional role is an Early Head Start Teacher. Early Head Start are comprehensive child development program which serve infants and toddlers from birth to age 3, pregnant moms and their families. The program is child centered that have the general objective of expanding the school status of children in low-pay families. Currently, the research is a teacher that prepare the children in areas such as intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically for their future educational and social endeavors. Students will be able to work cooperatively, express their ideas, keep their body and mind working, and will be stimulated intellectually. In my place of work, I also provide a conducive environment for the children. If the children are not provided with a peaceful and conducive environment, then their performance may plummet. My future plans are to make sure the children understand my role and where my boundaries are. Let them know what is and isn’t okay. Depending on how many children, I might consider a classroom management plan. 

Purpose

The purpose of my study is to focus on how to manage and improve behavior in the classroom. According to the Mills (2014) states that teaching students who are unmotivated and apathetic can be difficult challenge for any educator to overcome. This statement is so true because educators are responsible for accommodating strengths and weaknesses of each child by supporting them in reaching their maximum capacity in a learning environment. Educators need classroom management skills to encourage learning. Classroom with an appropriate management plan will invest less energy in disciplining and additional time in learning.

Problem

The problem is there is not a good classroom management system and strategies in place to ensure the children safety and success while in school. However, the significance of classroom management skills, it likewise reveals insight into the elements of classroom management. We might be in a serious situation even with a good classroom management system in place. Education World (1996) states, classroom management is not properly trained at most programs around the world. Classroom management must be easy to understand and manageable.

Population

The population of Page Moore Early Head Start/ Head Start center is consent of 1 center manager, 1 health service worker, 2 family service workers, 2 nutrition workers, 10 early head start teachers, 3 head start teachers, 3 assistant teachers, 2 floaters, and 2 custodians. All employees work together to provide service for a total of 91 students attending the program. Out of the 26 employees, 4 are obtaining a CDA certificate, 8 has a CDA certificate, 12 has a bachelor’s degree, and 4 has a master’s degree. This population is chosen for the study of classroom management because each staff can help manage a classroom. This population is very appropriate for this study because the staff is the main target of improving classroom management. Having more sources can help me to be prepared for improving learning and behavior problems.

One Research Questions

What are effective classroom management systems for preschool students? What is the best way to train teachers on classroom management? What I hope to get out of these questions is an answer that will guide me to making sure that classroom management is researched on a level of understanding.

Locus of Control

Within my local of control is to have control over collecting information from colleagues at Page Moore Early Head Start/ Head Start Center. I will have the ability to teach and train educators about classroom management strategies for improving behavior. Becoming familiar with the process and recognize how much action research is already a part of a daily life as a classroom educator (Mills, 2014). This would help me by making action research a part of daily teaching practices.
