Directions: Please answer any five (5) of the following seven (7) questions. Include the question at the start of your answer. Particularly strong answers may receive extra credit.

Feel free to use bullet points, properly cited quotations, and/or outside sources. An adequate answer will probably need at least four, five or more paragraphs. Write enough to get the job done. You don’t need to answer in an exhaustive fashion. All reasonable standards for a college-level paper will apply. That means I expect everyone to proofread carefully and do some revision before submitting the exam. “Perfection” is not required.

I am looking for thoughtful, creative responses and specific rather than just general information. Also, I don’t feel I need to agree with you on every point, if you’ve adequately supported your opinion and made a logical case.

These questions are intended to be broadly interpreted. I doubt if more than any two or three students will answer any one question in more than a generally similar way. The field of business sustainability is still in embryonic form, but I think we can state some basic ideas.

. How would you define or explain “the sustainable development approach to management strategies”? How can you sell sustainability as a business practice?

2. What are three or four examples of some practices that could transform a small business or company into a more competitive, ecologically sustainable, and perhaps even more profitable enterprise?

3. What would YOU consider to be the four or five most basic principles of ecological sustainability and sustainable businesses?

4. What are some tools and methods for greening any type of company?

5. How can sustainable science principles and methods improve a business’s strategic advantage? (Again, can you sell me on sustainability?)

6. What role does science play in bringing about business sustainability?

7. Is sustainability alone, enough? That is, if you are making a business more sustainable, do you think it is likely that you would find yourself eventually making other changes, such as making sure the business is more responsive to taking care of employee needs, such as for competitive wages, adequate retirement and medical insurance coverage, etc.? Will partnerships with other sustainable businesses be based on strong ethics and a commitment to business dealings which are fair to all parties? In other words, will a shift to sustainability also be accompanied by a shift in other values?
