All health care professionals in our country serve such an important role in our lives,

and go through extensive training and education in order to be able to provide the best care to a variety of individuals. We have several different types of major health care professionals who serve patients in a variety of ways. Just to name a few of these major health care professionals, we have nurses, physicians, dentists, orthodontists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, as well as certified nurse midwives. Two of these major health care providers that I will be discussing are nurses, as well as certified nurse midwives. A nurse if one of the most important health care providers in the health care system. We have nurses in our health care system who dedicate their hearts and time to take care of their patients, whether they are sick or not, and show so much compassion and care to their patients. They, also, have very important tasks, and perform very intricate and important skills to help their patients. In order to be able to perform these skills and tasks, these individuals have to go through extensive training and education to become nurses. However, depending on the type of nurse someone wants to be come, the amount of training and schooling vary among the different types of nurses in health care. We have registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, as well as certified nursing assistants. To become a registered nurse, this can take around four years to compete. The necessary requirements to become a registered nurse are an associate’s degree, which can take around two or three years to complete, a diploma program, as well as a bachelor of science in nursing degree, which can add about two or three more years to the associate’s degree, but takes around four to five years in total (Shi & Singh, 2019). Nurses can work in several different fields of health care. They have the abilities to take care of different needs of patients, including their mental, physical, and emotional needs, and take care of patients whether they are sick, injured, or completely healthy. Nurses can work in hospitals, clinics, and even in patients’ homes as private duty (Shi & Singh, 2019). On the other hand, there are certified nurse midwives. A certified nurse midwife would be considered an advanced practice nurse, as well as a non- physician practitioner, because of the fact that they have more education and clinical experience than a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse (Shi & Singh, 2019). Certified nursing midwives have the ability to deliver babies, manage and guide gynecologic and obstetric care, as well as provide education regarding family planning (Shi & Singh, 2019). What is so unique about certified nursing midwives is that they can even sometimes fill in for the obstetrician or gynecologist during prenatal care, as well as postnatal care. However, any sort of abnormal case or high- risk patients must then be turned back over to the obstetrician or gynecologist, or the certified nursing midwife can join the obstetrician or gynecologist in joint care (Shi & Singh, 2019). Certified nursing midwives, also, have the opportunity to be involved in prenatal genetic testing for their patients (Dettwyler, et. al., 2019). Reading about a study done in a rural part of Kansas, it is unfortunate to learn that there is such a shortage of maternity care in this area. Because of this problem, it has been hard for this rural area to incorporate the use of certified nursing midwives into maternity care (Koschwanez, et., al., 2021). When I think of health care professionals, nurses in particular, I think of the terms compassion and courageousness. 2 Chronicles 15:7 says, “But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded!” (100 Bible Verses about Nurses).

Dentists and Pharmacists

            For this week discussion board, we were asked to compare and contrast two health service professionals. I decided to compare and contrast dentists and pharmacists, because I feel like they’re overlooked when we are focused on primary or emergency care, though there are many other health professionals that are under appreciated or overlooked as well. Both dentists and pharmacists provide vital care and services to overall health.

            Dentists are the main providers of dental care, along side dental hygienist and assistants. There are also different dental specialties, which include but are not limited to orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, or oral pathology. Licensure is required to practice dentistry and includes graduation from an accredited dental school that offers with a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or doctor of dental medicine (DMD) and successful completion of both written and practical examinations. (Shi & Singh, 2019)

            An article written about Natalie Waylen, a civilian dental practitioner with the Ministry of Defence, that discusses her career path in London. Natalie Waylen explored different careers in healthcare and decided on a career in dentistry; upon completion of dental school she began in a general practice in which she saw thirty patients on first day. This was a much quicker pace than she was accustomed to and when they began training her on selling private treatments, she no longer felt general practice was a good placement for her. She next worked for a year at a local hospital in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and later decided to look for a job placement where she could practice general dentistry and still utilize her oral surgery skills. Which is how Natalie Waylen began working at the MOD as a civilian dentist in the military. (British Dental Journal, 2017)

            The reason I reference this article about Natalie Waylen, is because I felt it showed that dentistry can provide different career paths and options for transition to many different job opportunities.

            Pharmacists dispense medications that are prescribed by various medical providers, and also provide patient consultations on the proper medication selections and use. Shi and Singh (2019) state that a license to practice pharmacy is required in all states. Licensure requirements include graduation from an accredited pharmacy program, and successful completion of the state board examination plus practical experience or supervised internship. Shi and Singh (2019) add that pharmacists can specialize but most are generalists. (Shi & Singh, 2019)

            Haines, et al. (2017) reached out to various colleges to ask about staff responsibilities and experiences that were currently being offered to pharmaceutical students and their opinion of how prepared students are for pharmaceutical careers and what barriers there may be. From the responses, it appeared that time was the most common barrier, but degree of student interest, inexperience of staff, and lack of leadership support were also common responses (Haines, et al., 2017).

            Both careers require similar education and licensure, though it would seem dentistry has more career options and opportunity for transitions into other related fields. The two careers also are very different in concept, though work together when a dentist is required to write a prescription for patient and the pharmacist receives the prescription to fill.

            Jeremiah 51:8 ESV – “Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken; wail for her! Take balm for her pain; perhaps she may be healed,” I felt this verse related to the topic of pharmacists because it’s speaking to utilizing a balm or a medication to bring healing to the sick or suffering. Which is what we seek from our pharmacists today. Dentists and pharmacist have many differences in what they offer, however, they do have a few similarities in education programs and training.
