MY GENE IS SHAKER

A.

What do we know about the function of homologs of your gene of interest based on previously published work? What was done?

Paragraph 1:

· The shaker gene plays a part in operation of potassium ion channels that are integral membrane proteins. They are important in the correct functioning of the cell.

· Homologs are genes that have been inherited in two species by a common ancestor. Its function is to control the way proteins are made.

· A genetic screen was done which turned up different mutants that show the same phenotype.

B. Give a general description of the biological system your gene is associated with; for example: olfaction, vision, hearing, memory, mating, etc. 

Paragraph 2:

· The genetic information of the biological system is carried in the sequence of nucleotides in DNA. In this biological system, each DNA is formed from two complementary strands of nucleotides. The strands in this DNA are kept together by hydrogen bonds between G-C.

· They are kept in pairs and the eucaryotes are contained in the nucleus of the cell. My gene is associated with better vision and hearing abilities. Its memory is kept in the strands of the DNA that is associated with the same thing.

· The shaker gene of the multiple disease vector mosquitoes would determine their action as far as the gene has not mutated

C. What kind of behavioral assay or phenotype measurements can be used to study this biological system?

Paragraph 3:

· A large-scale screening can be done to determine if the phenotype is the same. If they are recessive, then a full complementation test can be done to show that the genes fall in the same biological system.

· Careful characterization of the phenotype can also be done to show the how the gene behaves in the biological system.

Paragraph 4:

· This will be the conclusion paragraph that will tie together the three questions and will show how all the previous paragraphs work together to successfully explain the Shaker gene.
