Introduction
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an essential aspect of clinical practice. Evidence-based practice refers to the idea that clinical practices should be highly based on scientific evidence. EBP involves the knowledge and the ability of a given individual to carry out judgment which is acquired through professional and training experiences. Examples of evidence-based practices involve oxygen utilization for patients infected with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease. Also, evidence-based practices are depicted in the measurement of blood pressure noninvasively in children. Evidence-based practice is important in clinical practice as it aims to provide effective care to the patients and improve the outcomes of these particular patients. Evidence-Based practice constitutes three components which include Proper external evidence, individual practitioner clinical expertise, and the preference of the patient. However, many individuals tend to confuse this concept of evidence-based practice with theory and research. The paper puts into consideration this aspect and explains the interrelationship which exists between evidence-based practice, theory, and research. However, the paper Discusses every aspect of entailed within research from various peer-reviewed articles by different individuals. Moreover, it discusses the health outcomes from the peer-reviewed articles and the various implementation strategies in the health care setting. Lastly, it discusses the credibility of the peer-reviewed articles and the specific research done on the given articles.
The interrelationship between Theory, Evidence-Based Practice, and Research
There exists a great interrelationship between theory, evidence-based practice, and research. By definition, Evidence-based practice refers to the practice of clinical aspects with the utilization of scientific evidence (Grove, 2018). Theory on the other side refers to the abstract thinking about a given phenomenon or the results that come from thinking of this given phenomenon. However, research can be defined as a systematic activity that is undertaken to increase the knowledge of a given phenomenon. It involves collection, organization, analyzing of a certain aspect thus increasing the stock of knowledge on this given aspect. All three aspects involve a phenomenon that is being dealt with differently. Through carrying out clinical practice using evidence-based practices, research questions together with the knowledge of a certain theory are generated.
The knowledge acquired through research guides the clinical practices and builds the individual’s knowledge through the development of theory. Theory gives the guidance used in research and as a result improving the clinical practices of the different individuals. The relationship between research and theory is that research leads to the generation of more knowledge which is utilized primarily in most of the theories. The relationship between research and evidence-based practice is that research utilizes a specific method to develop new knowledge about a specific phenomenon. The evidence-based practice applies the knowledge obtained from research in the making of patient care decisions. Understanding this aspect is essential as an individual ought to understand the concepts differently, the interrelationship existing between them, their importance in clinical practices, and their application in real-life situations. By doing this, it improves clinical practice by a larger percentage.
Research is done by James K Stoller and Ralph J Panos primarily portrays the aspect of evidence-practice through giving evidence of how oxygen therapy is used by patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). From this research, we identify research questions, sampling and sampling size, research designs, hypothesis, data collecting methods, and the research findings for the study. One research question had arisen for this research to be done. The question was that what is the role of oxygen in patients with asymptomatic COPD and moderate hypoxemia? . The sampling methodology utilized was random sampling since the patients with Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease were picked randomly from the population and administered with oxygen therapy to identify their effects on them. The sample size utilized in this particular study was eighty-seven and portraying specific characteristics. The characteristics of patients who were chosen for this particular study include patients who experienced airflow limitation which was characterized by hypoxemia of about 49-52mmhg, hypercapnia, and mild pulmonary hypertension (Stoller & Panos, 2021). These symptoms portrayed by this given individual are the primary symptoms of Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease.
The research involved the use of a specific research design in their presentation to the public who are interested in that particular research. The research design refers to the methodology a researcher utilizes in integrating all the components of given research so that they appear logically by ensuring that it effectively addresses the research problem. The main research design utilized in this given research was experimental. This is the type of design regarded as an experimental approach that utilizes two variables with one acting as a constant while the other one is altered to see the results (Bloomfield, 2019). For this particular case, the patients with COPD remained the constant for the experiments while the oxygen quantity was the one being altered to see their effect in these individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The hypothesis for this given patient was that there was a significant improvement in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were given supplementary oxygen compared to those who were not given. Various data collection methods were used in this particular research. The data collection methods include experimentation and surveys. The researchers selected individuals and administered supplemental oxygen to them and observing the effect which it had on these particular individuals. by doing this they recorded the data for later analysis. Various research findings were derived from this particular research. First, when supplemental oxygen was given to these individuals, which reduced difficulty in breathing by a larger percentage. The supplemental oxygen also assisted in improving the work rate in these given individuals with COPD. Lastly, the exercise improves exercise endurance for this patient. Through these findings, it is clear that supplemental oxygen is essential to patients with COPD as it negates the effects brought by COPD to these given individuals.
The above research is in concurrence with research was done by Koczulla(2018) who assessed the effects of oxygen therapy on patients with COPD. The main research question in this particular research is that is there any treatment advantage for patients who got supplemental oxygen compared to those who did not? There was no specific sample size as this particular research was primarily conducted through a review of articles by searching the word long-term oxygen therapy. The sampling method used includes systematic sampling since only articles with long-term oxygen therapy were selected. The research design utilized includes descriptive research design as it primarily describes the articles found in Pubmed. This research hypothesizes that oxygen is that there is a significant advantage for patients who receive supplemental oxygens compared to those who do not. The data collection method includes literature reviews from articles of Pubmed and many others (Koczulla, 2018). The research findings for this study were that utilization of supplemental oxygen by patients with COPD reduced the mortality rates among them.
Goals, health outcomes, and implementation strategy in health care-based articles
There were several goals, health outcomes, and implementation strategies in health care based on the articles. The main goal of evidence-based practice is to come up with evidence on something so that it can be implemented in clinical practice. For instance, the two research portrays evidence on how oxygen therapy is effective in patients with COPD. The health outcomes in these two articles are that utilization of oxygen helps in the reduction of mortality rates on patients suffering from COPD and reduces the conditions that come with COPD. To implement this in health care, the governments in different parts of the world should work to get ventilators which will assist in boosting the health of individuals suffering from COPD.
The credibility of the sources
The sources of these two research articles are essential and suitable to be read and utilized by any individuals who would what to know more about Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease. The websites published are well known which include the research gate and NCBI which are highly recognized by many individuals. This indicates that the articles are well developed and are essential to be utilized.
Conclusion
Evidence-based practice is essential for utilization in clinical practice. individuals should therefore work in their clinical practices by utilizing evidence to avoid messing up with any procedure that might compromise the life of individuals in health service organizations. Individuals need to learn to differentiate between theory, evidence-based practice, and research since they tend to be confusing for any individual who is not keen on distinguishing them.
