Topic:

Students are to present a persuasive speech on a current, controversial topic of state, regional, or international importance.  The speech should contain two to three main points designed to persuade the audience for or against a question of fact, value, or policy.

Length:

7-8 minutes

Required Materials:

A complete preparation outline, visual aid, and bibliography are required.

  • Outline:  Use the outline provided

Be sure that you support each point that you make with evidence and reasoning. If you need to jog your memory, please refer to the previous chapters we have studied. Do not include your bibliography on your outline. It is a separate assignment.

  • Visual Aid:  Click here to see specifics regarding Visual Aids. This will be a PowerPoint presentation delivered during the speech.
  • Bibliography:  A bibliography of sources (in proper APA style bibliographic form) used in the speech must accompany this speech.  Click here to learn how to cite sources in APA style.  Types of sources are books, periodicals, interviews, websites, and so forth.
  • For a grade of “A,” at least eight (8) sources should support your speech. Be sure to use different supporting material types (online periodical, books, pamphlets, interviews, credible websites, and so forth).  The supporting material (sources) should be indicated and highlighted out to the side of where you used them on the outline submitted to the instructor (example: CNN.com, childabuse.org, and so forth). You will also indicate your complete bibliographic citation on a separate bibliography assignment.

Presentation:

Do not forget to cite your sources in your speech presentation. For instance, “According to CNN news online,” or “These statistics came from USA today online.” You need to include this information in your speech as you deliver it. I even ask that you write it into your outline in parentheses (highlighting it in yellow) so you know where the information was found. [Example: B. Types of Skin Cancer (WebMD.com)]

Student Name Persuasive Outline

General Purpose: To persuade.

Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that legislation should put in place for people 65

years of age or older to be periodically re-examined for their driver’s license.

Central Idea: People who are 65 years of age or older should be periodically re-examined for

their driver’s license to ensure maximum safety to all who operate motor vehicles.

I. Introduction.

A. Attention – “Life is like a hot bath. It feels good while you’re in it, but the longer you stay in it, the more wrinkled you get.” -Jim Davis Have you ever heard the phrase “you drive like a grandpa”? Have you ever been driving down the road and seen a sweet, elderly woman struggling to see over her steering wheel? Yes, we all have.

        B. Preface.

1. Today, I will persuade you that people 65 years of age and older should be periodically re-examined for their driver’s license to ensure maximum safety to all who operate motor vehicles public roadways.

 2. I will discuss how aging affect the human body, the percentage of automobile accidents that involve the elderly, and the many benefits of instituting a re-evaluation for driver’s licenses.

(TRANSITION) We all feel the effects of growing older; but, scientifically, what is happening to our bodies?

II. Body.

       A. Aging in the human body affects a multitude of things physically and mentally.

1. “The number and size of muscle fibers also decrease. Thus, it takes muscles longer to respond in our 50s than they did in our 20s. . . Handgrip strength decreases, making it more difficult to accomplish routine activities such as opening a jar or turning a key.” (orthoinfo.aaos.org)

2. “The extent and nature of these changes vary widely and are gradual, and aging can have both positive and negative effects on cognition.  Wisdom and knowledge can increase with age, while memory and attention can decline.” -committee chair Dan G. Blazer, the J.P. Gibbons Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C (National Academy of Sciences)

3. “Health related changes such as arthritis and pain which can affect cognitive areas such as concentration and processing speed. . .” (Emory University Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center)

(TRANSITION) We all know that growing older has its perks, but it also affects our day to day tasks.

       B. How many people 65 or older are actually affected by automobile accidents?

1. “In 2017, almost 7,700 older adults (aged 65+) were killed in motor vehicle crashes, and more than 257,000 were treated in emergency departments for motor vehicle crash injuries.2 This means that each day, approximately 20 older adults are killed, and an additional 700 are injured in motor vehicle crashes.” (CDC.gov)

2. “A recent survey by TRIP, a nonprofit transportation group, and the

American Association

of State Highway and Transportation officials proved what many people have long suspected. Older drivers have the worst safety record of any age group, causing 17 percent of the fatal traffic accidents.”

3. In an article by the National Institute of Aging regarding safe driving tips, it is recommended that 1) “If you are 65 or older, see your eye doctor every year. Ask if there are ways to improve your eyesight. 2) If you need glasses or contact lenses to see far away while driving, make sure your prescription is up-to-date and correct. 3) Cut back on or stop driving at night if you have trouble seeing in the dark.”

(TRANSITION) However, preventative strategies are always more effective than trying to fix a problem while it is happening.

       C. There are unlimited personal and public safety benefits that go along with a re-examination for driver’s licenses.

1. It can stop a loved one from hurting themselves or another driver on a public roadway.

2. Periodical screenings and check ups can catch the onset or even confirm a disease or health issue an older person may have. You can find article after article saying to “that regular checkups are not necessary because they only want your money.” To make things worse, NPR.org published an article citing a study that found, “Fewer than half of primary care doctors surveyed say they routinely test patients 65 and older for problems with memory and thinking, according to a

report

released Tuesday by the Alzheimer’s Association. And just 16 percent of older patients surveyed say they receive regular cognitive assessments during routine health checkups”

(TRANSITION) The driving test could be so much more than just a driving test. It could help someone realize if they need help or have medical issues they were unaware of.

III. Conclusion.

        A. It is important to keep in mind the safety of our elders.

          1. Today I have persuaded the implementation of periodical re-examination for drivers 65 years of age or older in order to maintain a valid driver’s license.
          2. I have discussed how aging affects mental and physically abilities, the amount of elderly drivers who have automobile accidents, and how re-evaluating older drivers helps, not only them, but also the safety of the public

        B. I would like to leave you with this thought: Don’t regret growing older. It is a commodity and privilege denied to many.

Thank you.

Title: Stop Texting While Driving

I. Introduction

A. Be careful: STOP TEXT MESSAGING WHILE DRIVING.

B. Listener Relevance: In certain states driving text is unconstitutional, and we nevertheless do it.

C. Speaker credibility: Families, colleagues, citizens in daily life have lost somebody they love, because the driver has decided to submit a text instead of staring at the lane. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that in 2015, upwards of 2,5 million patients were admitted in emergency departments (EDs) after motor vehicle accidents (MVCs) (Ferdinand, Aftab & Akinlotan, 2019).

D. Thesis Statement: I’m starting today by explaining how Texting is a problem; would you not be a text while driving with a solution?

1. Need

1. Today, society faces this crippling dilemma

2. In 2016 nearly 3500 people died and 391 000 were hurt by impaired text driving (Ferdinand, Aftab & Akinlotan, 2019)

3. According to a research carried out (White & Bronsburg, 2016), the effect of boredom, social relations, social anxiety and social happiness on the driver of that text has been examined. The dilemma has an effect on our existence as a family may sense the circumstance text and push it at home.

4. This is not considered by many as a concern.

5. They’re incorrect, I agree, because we’re carving statistics.

6. In addition, a systematic analysis of the literature examined by peers on distracted driving showed that 165 research examining the link between cellular and driving efficiency found that cellular usage was correlated with adverse driving performance (98 percent) (Ferdinand, Aftab & Akinlotan, 2019)

Now that I told you about the problem. I will discuss solutions as we move forward. (transition)

2. Satisfaction

A. There are penalties for text; the latest results are aligned with the belief that an improvement in text punishment would be an efficient way to decrease the conduct (Hayashi, Friedel, Foreman & Wirth, 2019)

B. To date, law has been introduced to restrict all vehicles from text driving in 47 states and Columbia District (Governors Highway Safety Association).

C. Some people claim it won’t work. I disagree since certain tactics such as the educational initiative, such as U Drive U Text, U Pay. (NHTSA, [55]), have been placed together, and there is still no proof that this was successful.

A. Now that we have talked about some solution, lets visualized how the world would be a better place once we implement changes to texting and driving.

3. Visualization

A. The pictures illustrate how each of us might be impaired if we do not obey the approach of not driving whilst texting. Imagine how better driving is if we don’t type a text while driving. This would be a happier planet until a solution is set in motion.

4. Action

A. I addressed today how texting and driving was a concern with a remedy. Our highway would be a better environment for and of us as long as we join together to avoid texting while driving.

B. Texting has led family members, acquaintances, because of speeding and texting, to fall into an accident. No loved one needs to get the call that, because of texting and driving, somebody they respect is not coming home. The only way to avoid this is that we stop.

C. Lives would be endangered if you choose to drive and message.

D. If we observe the warnings of not texting while driving, that would lower the mortality risk. Stop texting when driving is what we need to achieve collectively and there is little direct attempt to indicate and usefulness in the media and initiative (Hayashi, Friedel, Foreman & Wirth, 2019)

E. I assume that everyone has been touched by this speech and the need not to text when driving would make a difference.
