Principles of Fire Prevention, David Diamantes, Third Edition, Jones and Bartlett, Burlington, MA. 2016

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides fundamental information regarding

the history and philosophy of fire prevention, organization and operation of a fire

prevention bureau, the use of fire codes, identification and correction of fire hazards, and

the relationships of fire prevention with built-in fire protection systems, fire investigation,

and fire and life-safety education.

COURSE RATIONALE: The American Fire Service faces many challenges in the 21st century. The threat of terrorism on American soil is more prevalent than ever, and even though we live in a technologically advanced society, we still experience fires with multiple deaths, injuries, and large property losses. The scope of our profession is changing, with fire departments across the country being forced to do more with less. The changing roles of the fire service necessitate an ever-increasing demand for fire prevention efforts. Because the fire department is one of the most critical players in protecting our citizens means that the prevention of fires is a key component of our mission. Obtaining a sound knowledge of fire prevention is important in keeping our citizens safe, but it is vitally important in keeping our firefighters safe.

COURSE GOALS:
To provide students with a firm base of knowledge and awareness of how fire prevention affects fire department operations.

To provide students with an overview of how the Firefighter, Fire Officer, Public Information Officer, Fire and Life Safety Educator, and other members of the fire service influence the fire prevention effort in a community.

COURSE GOALS:
To review the history of fires that have resulted in severe loss of life and to increase student awareness in the need to learn from the past (and learn from current events) so that it is not repeated in the future.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD: This course is structured as an online program, with no classroom sessions or requirements. The content of the course is delivered in its entirety through Blackboard Learn, and students are required to be familiar with how to utilize the various components of this interactive learning tool. Students are expected to log in frequently to keep up with the workload, be familiar with the course content, participate in the required activities, and complete the assigned tasks detailed in the syllabus.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: The assignments for the course are detailed in the syllabus, and include the chapters to be read, assignments and discussions to be submitted, and the exam and project schedule within each module. Students are responsible for reading each chapter in the textbook and submitting the required assignments when necessary. The discussions for select chapters are also included within the modules and require the student to submit a response and comment on two other student’s responses. All writing assignments shall be double-spaced pages using 12 font.

There are five (5) exams scheduled during the semester, and each will contain twenty-five (25) multiple choice questions. The exams will cover all the material in the chapters and are worth 60% of the total grade

STUDENT EMAIL ACCOUNTS: From time to time it may be necessary to provide important class announcements via email or through Blackboard. All email communications will be sent to your school email address. Students should be checking their school email and Blackboard frequently since this is the method of communication for class information.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE: There will be
five
exams given in the course which

will count for 60 percent of the total grade. The exams will be available in Blackboard, and their schedule of availability is noted later in this syllabus. The term paper will count for 20 percent of the total grade, and the assignments/discussions together will count for 20 percent of the total grade.

TERM PAPER: Each student will be required to submit a term paper on the Elliott Chambers Rooming House Fire that claimed 15 lives in the City of Beverly on July 4, 1984. This paper shall be a minimum of 3 (three) pages in length, and be 12-font and double spaced, with an appropriate works cited page in addition to the three-page minimum. The paper should focus on the issues related to the fire, citing specific examples relating to the lessons learned and the results of the fire investigation. Also, see if you can find any pertinent code changes or adoptions that occurred in Massachusetts as a result of this fire. The paper is due by 11:59PM on April 15, 2018.
