Choosing a Virtual Arts Encounter Option

Please review this information carefully and prepare to do the following: 

1. Virtual Concert Attendance OR Museum Visit – Sometime during workshops two, three, or four, you must attend either a virtual classical concert (live-streamed or pre-recorded) OR virtually visit a major metropolitan art museum using their “virtual tour” feature.

a. Virtual Classical Concert Requirements:

i. Ideally, this will be a live-streamed performance by a major metropolitan symphony, ballet or opera.  However, you may attend a prerecorded concert as posted on the host organization’s website.

ii. Note: You must attend a live-streamed OR pre-recorded classical concert from any of the organizations specified in the hyperlinked review articles listed above.

iii. Reminder: every student choosing a classical concert MUST choose a different composer.  You must choose one from the “Composers for Concert Presentation ” document as listed above.

iv. Your analysis will be over one movement of a symphony or one chorus or scene from an oratorio, opera, or ballet.  You will analyze only one musical selection in your presentation.

i. If you choose a live-streamed option, you will choose a Youtube example of a selection included in your live-streamed virtual concert event for your analysis.  You will specify a 2 – 3 minute counter footage segment in your presentation.

ii. If you choose a pre-recorded concert, you will choose one selection from the concert for your analysis. You will specify a 2 – 3 minute counter footage segment in your presentation.

b. Museum Visit Requirements:

i. This will be a virtual visit to a major metropolitan art museum with a robust European collection.  

ii. Note: You must attend a museum from any of the organizations specified in the above web article. 

iii. Reminder: Every student choosing a virtual museum visit must choose a different artist.

iv. You will choose one artwork by your artist for your presentation.

c. Concert or Art Museum Oral Presentation – By the end of Workshop 4, you will present an oral report describing your virtual concert event or virtual art museum visit.

3. Online students will create a checklist-aligned PowerPoint presentation, and then present it in a video recording using
Kaltura Personal Capture
.  Online presentations must be completed by the end of Workshop 4, so they may be peer-reviewed in Workshop 5.  

3. You will use the “Checklist for Virtual Concert Attendance Presentation” or “Checklist for Virtual Museum Visit Presentation” document to build your PowerPoint file.  You’ll submit a rough draft in Workshops 2 and 3. 

3. You’ll have the opportunity to update it and recover deducted points if you complete your final video recording.

 This learning activity has been designed for two primary purposes.  First, it satisfies an essential part of a broader liberal arts program outcome.  The primary GEO (General Education Outcome) to which this activity is aligned is as follows:

· Students can apply humanistic and artistic knowledge to describe and analyze creative expression from a Christian worldview.

The specific criteria associated with accomplishing this is as follows:

 

Appreciating Performances and Exhibitions

 

 

Students can critically interpret or reinterpret artistic works as aesthetically experienced in performances or exhibitions.

 

Fulfilling this outcome is an integral part of your Liberal Arts education at IWU.  This language is a part of a college credit transfer reciprocity agreement that ensures your course credits equate to Fine Arts courses in other universities.  As a result, complying with this guideline adds value to your degree.

Higher education policymakers agree that requiring students to attend a live performance is a vital part of a liberal arts education.  No virtual substitute can accomplish this in quite the same way.  However, due to the extreme circumstance we’re facing in this country and around the world, most art museums are closed and all classical music performance previously open to the public have been postponed. 
For the duration of this course only, all students will use the temporary “virtual” option.
 

Second, this learning activity is designed to help develop another liberal arts outcome as well – that of oral communication. Making this presentation will help you continue to develop professional-level presenting skills.  This secondary GEO, referencing oral communication, is as follows.

· Students can communicate orally through well-prepared, purposeful presentations and interactions.

Your oral presentation project will help you continue to build presentation skills in four key areas.

Organization

The student’s organizational pattern (specific introduction and conclusion, sequenced material within the body, and transitions)   is clearly and consistently observable within the presentation.

Language

The student’s language choices are thoughtful and generally support the effectiveness of the presentation. Language in presentation is appropriate to the audience.

Delivery

Delivery techniques (posture, gesture, eye contact, and vocal expressiveness) make the presentation interesting, and speaker appears comfortable.

Supporting Material

Supporting materials (explanations, examples, illustrations, statistics, analogies, quotations from relevant authorities) make appropriate reference to information or analyses that generally supports the presentation or establishes the presenter’s credibility/ authority on the topic.

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Navigate to the discussion forum below.  Create a new thread named “Student Name – Virtual Concert or Virtual Art Museum.”

a. In preparation for attending a virtual classical concert or art museum, search the resources above for qualifying virtual classical concert events or major museums featuring a virtual attendance or visit option.

b. Forum Post Part 1: From your research, indicate the live-streamed or prerecorded virtual classical concert event OR major art museum you will attend before the end of Workshop 4.  Indicate which you intend to visit.  

a. Remember: In workshop 2. you will be asked to choose an artist (museum visit) or composer (classical concert).  All students must choose a different historic figure.  The first to post reserves that person.

c. Forum Post Part 2: Copy the virtual concert event’s website URL or virtual art museum’s website URL into your thread.  Be sure the link is active and points to the correct webpage.  Use the hyperlink tool in the tool bar to set the link to open in a new browser window.
