NURS 2245 Professional Nursing II: Staff Teaching Assignment
Objectives:
1) Demonstrate assessment for a learning need.
2) Develop a teaching plan meaningful to the learners and applicable to situations the new graduate is likely to encounter.
3) Describe implementation and evaluation of teaching plan.
Review: Taylor, Lillis, & Lynn (2019) Chapter 9 – pages 186 (Starting with The Nurse as a Teacher)
–
205. This content will discuss teaching patients – which is much the same as teaching peers.
You will also need to include at least two other credible references to support your thoughts and topic you will be teaching.
Note: There are 2 pieces to this assignment that will be handed in.
1. The outline answering the questions as stated in the rubric.
2. The power point presentation with the content that you will present to the learners.
Due: Teaching plan will be uploaded to the Dropbox by the assigned due date (see course schedule).
During your NURS 2290 or 2390 clinical days, please assess for a learning need of your peers. Start by thinking about what you feel you need to know more about (your peers may need to learn more about the same things you feel you do) and then validate the learning need with your peers. Develop a teaching plan at an appropriate level for the audience (about to graduate associate degree nursing students). Your topics must be approved by your 2245 course instructor at least one week prior to the due date; post in the Discussion.
F2F students will be asked to present their staff teaching assignment in class. Please come prepared to class.
Some topics that have been very nicely addressed in the past include:
· fall risk assessment and prevention of falls
· tube feedings – general guidelines, types, complications, etc
· ostomy care
· incontinence- causes, management, etc.
· infection control issues – MRSA, VRE, etc
· management of different types of leg ulcers
· sensory deficits and nursing management
· caring for the client with chest tubes
· types of IV solutions
· categorization of cardiac medications
· commonly used herbal remedies
These topics are ideas to get you thinking. Choose something that you can address in some depth in 15 minutes (for example, don’t choose “diabetic care” – focus on something specific such as types of insulin, etc.). Do not choose a ‘disease’ process.
