MID-TERM – MOVIE REVIEW 

Over the past few decades there have been more movies that depict the wide field of professionals in the Human Services field and the clients they serve as it relates to the field of Human Services.   The purpose of the movie review is to assist students in understanding how to identify the various stages of grief.  Students will find and review a movie based on the following criteria below:

Stages of Grief – Week 3

Some common grief reactions that are related to deaths due to COVID-19 are: Shock, disbelief, anxiety, distress, anger, sadness, loss of sleep and appitite. During this pandemic some people were unable to be with their loved ones when they pass or unable to say “goodbye” or morn their loss in-person, with friends and family. Because people cope with their loss in different ways, it is critical to seek any resources that are available to you.

Human services professionals know and understand the 5 stages of grief (Denial and Isolation; Anger; Bargaining; Depression and, Acceptance). It is important to know that everyone doesn’t handle grief in the same way. There are no set time or order in working through these stages. We must be careful to not judge how people experience their grief.

Research finds that specific counselor behaviors such as: Enthusiasm, Confidence and Belief in the client’s ability to change has been very successful. The clients are more likely to acheve their goals with a more positive relationship with their counselor.

The following are the top ten basic counselling skills: Listening; Empathy; Genuiness; Unconditioinal Positive Regard; Concreteness; Open Questions; Counselor Self-Disclosure; Interpretation and Information Giving and Removing Obstacles to Change.

purpose of the movie review is to assist students in understanding how to identify the various stages of
grief. Students will find and review a movie based on the following criteria below:

● Submit by due date in class (EMAILED ELECTRONICALLY)
● Movie review must be at least 5 pages in length (no specific formatting)
● Name of the movie and main characters.
● Summary of the movie.
● Explain how the main character is dealing with the loss.
● Identify the stage(s) of grief the main character is demonstrating and explain why you think

his/her behaviors are reflected in the stage you chose
● Describe if the main character transitioned through stages or remained in one stage and the

behaviors that corresponded to the transition
● Discuss the strategies that was used to help the main character work through the grief process
● Provide some insight on how you think other strategies could have been helpful for the

character
