Clarify Your Values

1. Examine your past experiences to identify the values you use to make choices and decisions. Write your values here:

Inspire a Vision

5. Make a list of all the things you want to accomplish, and ask yourself “Why?” Write your list below. This can include occupational or personal related goals.

6. Be curious about what is going on around you – especially things that aren’t working well. Make a list of at least three things not working and consider how your vision might address these.

7. Consider how you and others can change your job to a “calling.” Answer this question: “How does my work make the world a better place?”

Challenge the Process

8. Challenge is the opportunity for greatness. People do their best when there is the chance to change the status quo. Do something each day so that you are a better you than the day before. Identify at least three opportunities you will try in the next week. Consider a new schedule, a new activity, taking on a new project, searching the Web for something related to what you do, interview a leader in your organization.

9. Consider the lessons that you have learned. Think about a recent success and a recent failure. Describe how each of these has contributed to your personal learning about what it takes to be a leader. Describe at least one success and one failure and how your experiences will change what you would do next time if presented with the same challenge.

Enable Others to Act

Leaders know they can’t do it alone. Leaders invest in creating trustworthy relationships. Describe at least three ways that you can foster collaboration within your current work environment.

11. Think about your current work supervisor. If you could offer this person one piece of advice to help enable or strengthen your work group, what would you say? This advice might be some simple recommendations. Take care to not include actual names of people.

Encourage the Heart

12. Leaders need to continue to encourage others to continue to do the best that they can. Recognition of efforts and celebrating of successes is important. Identify how encouragement or success is celebrated in your current organization. Does this meet your needs? How would like to be recognized?

Final Reflection

Review your work to this point in your Leadership Portfolio. Summarize and evaluate what you have learned about your own leadership values. Propose values that will continue to influence the ways that you deal with and work with other people. This is a summary of your entire portfolio. This narrative needs to be at least 500 words in length. Appropriate citations should also be included.
