Research Question:
How have student protests in South Africa hindered universities from raising tuition on
marginalized students?

Goals: The goal of the movement was to stop increases in student fees, and also to increase
government funding of universities
What is #feesmustfall? It was a student led protest that started in October 2015 to stop
student fees from rising.
Where did it happen? It happened in South Africa in multiple Universities starting at University
of Witwatersrand and then spread to multiple universities across the country.
How did it get started? This started with a sit in and lock down for three days led by the SRC
leader of the university including staff in the lock down.
Why did it happen? The students were protesting because tuition was being raised to 10.5%. It
happened because the students did not agree on paying the new proposed fees.Not only did
this cause hardships on the majority of students, this most affected the marginalized students
putting them out of school due to the rise of cost. They were raising fees due to numerous
reasons not released until the protests started.
Violence: Student Violence: Students were allegedly violent against security guards. The
security personnel were allegedly beaten and an incident occurred and the student allegedly
threw a stone at the security personnel’s head, resulting in hospitalization.
Police Violence: Police brutality hit a high point because they were deployed onto campus and
did not restrain from using blunt and brutal force. Students retaliated by throwing stones at
police officers in defense of stun guns, rubber bullets, and water cannons.
Outcome: The South African government increased the amount given to higher education to
R17-Billion (1.1 million US dollars) over 3 years. For the first year, there was no fee raise, but
the second year there was 8% raise. But universities were given the option to decide how much
tuition would increase
Legacy: Protests lead to the guarantee from the national government of free higher education
in 2018. This then led to the creation of a national bursary scheme that aids to help poor and
working class students in South Africa.
