My personal assessment
Human services social work
Cultural humility is important in the human service practitioner practice because as a human service practitioner, we deal with a lot of different cultures and to deal with different cultures we must be able to understand the culture these people come from. The United States has many immigrants coming in the states and a lot of them need help getting accustomed to the different things and language they come across. For example, many people from different parts of the world come to the united states to get better opportunities and receive a better education. Some immigrants come so they can provide for their family back home. Human Service Practitioner are to help the people understand the different things they are going to experience while living in the United States. Although, we may not speak the language they speak but we can try our best by offering different counselors who do speak the language and try to give them the help they need to feel at home. I believe as a human service practitioner we should be able to get assistance for the people that need help and make sure we try everything we can to make our clients feel as comfortable as possible.
Describe your personal characteristics that would contribute to your success as a human services professional practitioner. I am a self-disciple person; I know how to separate my personal feelings from my work. I know I will hear many different stories that will probably affect my personal feelings, but I must separate my emotions from my job to stay professional. I do not respond with my feelings but with my mind. I also feel like I am a patient person. Patient is a big key to being a human service practitioner because you must have patients to deal with all types of people and their problems.
Describe the top two characteristics that you identify as your greatest strengths and explain why you identify them as such. My top two characteristics would be leadership and empathy. The leadership I have in me will help me make the right decisions for my clients. My clients can depend on me if they need someone to talk to or get advice. I consider myself a strong leader because I can make decisions to help myself and others. I believe having empathy for my clients will help my clients open up to me and share their stories with me. I had many things going on as a child up until I was a teenager. I believe by my experience; certain things will help my clients feel comfortable expressing their feelings because I experienced some of the things they experienced.
Describe your limitations and explain how you would develop your skills in these areas. One limitation I would love to work on is the lack of knowledge I have with some of the cases I will have to experience. I would love to become a human service practitioner and be able to help someone in need. I also would love to work on my communication skills because sometimes I can come off a little strong towards some people. I tend to over talk a little bit and I would love to work on these limitations.
· How do you identify your ethnicity and race? My ethnicity and race are Black/African American.
· How do people see you in the context of your cultural identity? People see me as an African American
· How does your family history influence your cultural identity? My family history influences my cultural identity by celebrating black history month, every year we get together and we light the grill up and we all must tell each other one thing about a famous African American and how that person changed the world.
· How do you see people through the lens of your cultural identity? I see my culture as one big happy family. Although we all come from different families and we are all different shapes and sizes, we all have the same cultural background.
· Describe a benefit of your culture. My culture benefit by many things and some of the things I love is the soul food and the soulful music my ancestors created to celebrate our history. Another benefit we have is the ability to have a black history month so we can tell the world about our most famous black people in the world and how they benefited this world.
· Describe a limitation of your culture. We all have limits when it comes to certain things, we do but, I’m not sure if we any limits to celebrating our culture.
· How do you view fairness? I view fairness by every culture being treated the same and have the same limits and standards.
· How has your identity changed throughout your life? I do not think my identity change at all except the fact, I am older now.
· How do your values and ethics influence your cultural identity, and vice versa? My values and ethics influence my cultural identity by the things that has been passed on by my grandmother and grandfather. I have a few things like, my grandmother jewelry that has been passed down from generations and the different stores my grandfather uses to tell me and my siblings when we have an argument and cannot get alone.
· How does your cultural identity impact your role as a human service’s professional practitioner? I think it will impact my role because there are a lot of people that are from the same culture, I am from and we can relate to one another by sharing different stores and experiences we had when we were younger or still face today.
· Explain how you might feel if one of your identities were ignored and how you might ensure that the cultural identities of the people with whom you will work are respected. I think it might upset me a little because we as African Americans go through a lot in this world by not being accepted by other cultures and being treated like we do not belong on this earth. As a human services practitioner I will make it my duty to make sure the African Americans who I have as clients get the same treatment as others. Although, I think everybody should be treated equally, we still have a lot of different people who do not treat my race fair.
· Explain how your sense of fairness might be influenced by your culture and how that might impact the work you will do as a human services practitioner. As I was growing up and my mother made us watch a lot of black history movies and my school, during black history month, made us watch a few movies. We as African
Americans were not treated fair at all. We were not given the same benefits as Caucasian people. I believe nobody should be treated the way the people in those movies were treated and that is the main reason why I treat everybody with kindness and fairness. By watching those movies and being taught to treat others the way you want to be treated, it gave me a sense to help and treat others with respect, if I want to receive respect. I still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to learning about my culture and I have been taught a few things, but I feel like there is more I need to learn and experience in my culture.
One of my old coworkers I worked with at my old job, house burned down, and his wife just had a baby. I took matters into my own hands and gave the couple the old clothes I had from when my baby was younger. Luckily, I still had a lot of clothes, blankets, and shoes. I wanted to help as much as possible, so I decided to take up a collection from some of our coworkers. We manage to get a lot of money for them to stay in an inexpensive hotel for about a week, so they could have a little bit of a stress relief for a few days. I believe as a human service practitioner; it is our duty to show leadership and help others in need. Many people turn to us for help, and they will need someone who has a strong mind and is patient enough to handle these situations. I am not familiar with any successful human service practitioner but as I continue my journey in becoming a human service practitioner, I hope to learn about many successful practitioners. I am trying my best to learn about a lot of different ways I can become a successful human service practitioner. I also believe a human service practitioner should be able to have a good listening ear and self-discipline. Having a good listening ear and self- discipline are good characteristics because it lets the client know you are willing to listening to their stories and help resolve so of the issue they are having. Also having self-discipline will show that you are dedicated to your work and you know how to keep your work as professional as possible so you can be able to assist your clients in a professional matter.
