Written Home Safety Assessment (due week 8)

This assignment is worth 10% of your final mark in PSW 164.

Due: Week 8 in class at medication practical demonstration testing

Length: 6 pages maximum for written assignment – title and reference pages, home

safety assessment tool are extra

Format: Essay, including at least 3 referenced resources

Purpose: The student will be able to use their observational skills and use the

knowledge they have learned in the PSW courses to date regarding home

safety. The student will be able to conduct a home safety assessment (using

a home safety assessment tool), identify hazards, and make

recommendations regarding modifications that should be made to make the

home a safer place to live. Students will also assess, identify hazards, and

make recommendations regarding modifications that should be made to make

the home a safer place to live from the perspective of a specific client

population.

Content:

 Select a home – it can be a house or an apartment. It can be your home, a

relative’s home or a friend’s home.

 Research and find a home safety assessment tool online. Reference your

selected home assessment tool appropriately on your reference page.

 Describe the home in detail to include type of home, age of the home, number

and age of current occupants.

Consider the following hazards: Physical hazards (slippery floors, objects in hallways,

poor lighting, scatter rugs, etc). Chemical hazards (household cleaners, laundry

detergent, food storage, medication, personal care items etc). Electrical hazards

(electrical equipment, electrical outlets etc.). These are just some examples – this is not

a complete list.

 Use the home assessment tool to identify any hazards in the following

areas: Front and back entrances, kitchen, bathroom, living room, two bedrooms

(master and alternate), and laundry room (If the laundry room is in the basement

of an apartment building it can still be assessed).

 Write up a description of the hazards you identified in each area of

the home.

 What modifications would you need to make in order to eliminate the hazards

identified in each area? Describe these modifications in detail for each area of

the home.

Now assess the home (include all areas of the home as listed above) from the

perspective of one of the following client populations:

(Choose Option #1 or #2):

#1). An elderly person living in the home. This individual has osteoarthritis, a history of

falls, poor vision and mild cognitive impairment.

 What are the potential hazards for this individual given their health concerns?

Consider all areas of the home as

discussed above.

 How can these hazards be corrected/eliminated?

#2). A toddler living in the home. (1 to 3 years)

 What are the potential hazards for this child – consider the normal growth and

development for a 1-3 year old child. Consider all areas of the home as
