If excessive calories are consumed or if the energy expenditure is minimized, a weight gain will result. Alternatively, a reduction in calorie consumption or increase in energy expenditure results in a loss of body weight. Yet for all the simplicity, an obesity epidemic has swept the nation as many Americans struggle in their attempts to lose weight.

Obese individuals are often stigmatized for their weight. It is said that weight stigmatization or bias is the last socially acceptable form of discrimination in society. Weight bias takes on a variety of forms including teasing and discrimination in the workplace and may include feelings that obese people are indulgent, lazy, sloppy, or lacking personal responsibility. Several studies have supported the notion that weight bias is pervasive among physicians and other healthcare professionals leading to alterations in the quality of care that obese people receive. Weight bias has the potential to negatively influence an obese individual’s health in many ways.
