Discussion Topic

The threaded discussions will provide the student with the opportunity to explore different topics, share what he/she is learning with classmates, and gain clarity about the content. This assignment reflects student centered, independent learning.

The students will:

1. Apply critical thinking through participation of selected topics

2. Engage in thoughtful discourse with peers

3. Incorporate topic discussion into clinical judgment and decision making within practice setting

For each posted discussion question, the student is expected to:

The questions below should serve as a guide to formulating your posting. Don’t just answer the questions, create a narrative paragraph(s) using the questions to direct your thinking.

· Support your initial discussion with a professional nursing journal that is no more than 5 years old.

· The original posts must be at least 300 words in length

· Discussion responses should demonstrate critical thinking skills and be thoughtful, promote, and respectful

· Posting should ask for clarification, challenge (respectfully) ideas, or describe a situation that illustrates the points being made. Simply agreeing or disagreeing with a post is not adequate

· Worth 15 points / 5%

· Use the following question to focus your thought on what is dying like in the United States today excluding the unique circumstances of Covid. What does dying mean for you or for someone dear to you? What would make the experience meaningful for you-can death be meaningful? (For your discussion think about the location, age, and reasons most people die today. Does advances in medical technology that impact chronic illnesses influence the dying process? Shat is the difference between death and dying? Identify characteristics of what a good death might be for yourself. Include characteristics that are related to your culture.)

· Give the questions some thought and answer honestly

· Number your answers to correspond with the question

Questions:

1. What will be important to you when you are dying?

2. What limitations to your physical and mental health would affect the health care decisions you would make?

3. Would you prefer hospice care with the goal of keeping you comfortable in your home during the final period of your life, as an alternative to hospitalization?

4. In general, do you wish to participate or share in making decisions about your health care and treatment?

5. Would you always want to know the truth about your condition, treatment options, and the chance of success of treatments?

6. What are the most comforting and frightening aspects of dying? Give examples.
