SPEAKER 1:The next five to 10 years, I want to say that if you are not seeking an education or if you are not bettering yourself in the field of law enforcement, criminal justice, communications, even business, it’s going to be a very difficult field to stay in. It has become extremely technical. Your analytical skills are going to be needed, because that’s what future leaders are going to be required to have. You will see one that will become

more technology oriented. And we see that now with we have computers in the car, which we’ve had for several decades. But now you’re seeing body cameras. You’re starting to see the advent of different types of technology to help us do our jobs better. And so if you have a problem with technology, it’s going to become problematic for you. The way that we communicate now is extremely different. I mean, so we still have radios, but the technology of the radio has changed and how we do that.

01:02But even how we incorporate social media. You know historically, we would have someone that would represent the police department or a public information officer. But now officers are engaging with the community in the social world on their own while they’re at work. I mean, you certainly can follow an officer on Twitter. You can watch them through the academy all the way through graduation. You can speak with the chief directly one on one. And these are things historically you weren’t able to do. So I think that as we move on, not just the next five years, next 10 years, next 20 years, you’re going to have to have an officer that’s educated, that clearly understands the aspects of community, what makes community, what defines community,

what affects a community. And how you then have to adjust your policing ability to serve definitely the citizens much better. So you’re certainly going to have to have a jack of all trades, masters of none very educated person, very diverse person. And it will definitely change the way in which we do policing. Even as it did for me 25 years ago, it is dramatically different than when I started.
