Cyber insecurity has led to different methods evolving to help curb it, including artificial intelligence. Those in support of this new technology, artificial intelligence, believe that it can work beyond human capacities, hence monitoring and detecting threats and stopping them faster to avoid the costly aftermath of a cyber-attack. Those opposed to it see it as an advanced platform that attackers may use to diversify their attacks. However, these discussions are all based on the need to secure the business environment and free it from cybercrime-related attacks. Artificial intelligence has increased visibility in businesses’ attack environments to take the right precautions in preventing and mitigating any cyber security attacks. For example, the system detects and flags the anomalies and exploitable vulnerabilities making the security analysts to work on them early enough and save time as well as the business costs (Anwar & Hassan, 2017). The experts also suggesting intelligent systems in accurately detecting and remediating the attacks in real-time in the future in the course of strengthening the business cyber security and also protecting confidential business data. Artificial intelligence can also help in solving difficult situations that humans have no adequate capacity or know-how to handle but have considerable information on what to be expected in case the threat materializes. Artificial intelligence is a tool that enables companies to remain visibly aware of the evolving threats since cybercriminals are advancing their skills day by day. This ensures that the security analysts take a right and appropriate measures and quickly respond to any exploitable vulnerability that may compromise the business security. However, artificial intelligence has opened up a new wave of threats that negatively impact businesses’ operations, such as the poisoning attacks, which are capable of manipulating the input and giving out output that is similar to the attacker’s goals hence accessing business’s systems successfully without detection. Further, Therefore, although artificial intelligence is an essential technology for combating cybersecurity threats, it is essential to consider the dangers it poses to the business environment because it is capable of changing the business operations if, in any case, it becomes a pathway of attacks.

The issue of artificial intelligence in fighting cybercrime can be understood by first looking into cybercrime and the failure of the different methods adopted. This will be followed by analyzing the two sides of the controversy, the advantages and the disadvantages. The advantages side supports artificial intelligence to be in the frontline in curbing cybercrime, whereas the resistance side is against this method, citing that it is a gateway to attackers, especially in businesses.

Brief Summary of Cyber Crime

The issue of malware and cybercrime can be traced back to the developmental stages of internet-computing because it coincides with the evolution of the internet. The internet grew, allowing for the crimes to become more complicated, with a significant wave of attacks happening in the 1980s using emails’ proliferation. The Nigerian Prince Scam is one of the earliest forms of cyber-attacks delivered to several inboxes requesting money to set up a transfer and later to share it. However, the growth of cybercrime was seen in the 2000s when social media came into life (Taddeo, McCutcheon &Floridi, 2019). People started putting all information in profile databases, and this led to identity theft. The cyber attackers were now interested in accessing bank accounts and accessing personal information for their benefit. Cybercrime has grown into an industry that is totaling nearly half a trillion dollars yearly (Bernik, 2018). Cybercriminals are advancing their technical skills day by day, making the cybersecurity experts always on the move to develop new or advanced security apparatuses. The hackers have gone on a spree with several incidences, such as the Russian hackers’ attack on the Ukrainian energy company. The attacks have led to organizations devising proactive security measures for preventing attacks before they occur. Businesses are struggling to deal with cybercrime because of the economic losses; in 2020, the loss was predicted to be over $3 trillion, with 74% of businesses being hacked (Mosteanu, 2020). Therefore, cybersecurity is a worldwide concern where every effort is dedicated to keeping the attackers at bay.

The argument for Adopting Artificial Intelligence in Businesses

As the threat of cyber insecurity is continually evolving, businesses must adapt survival measures. Artificial Intelligence is centrally placed because it can detect threats irrespective of their shape in attack and defense. This is a multifaceted tool capable of collecting data, organizing it, and protecting it against outside forces’ access. AI increases data security systems’ efficiency by spotting the potential threats before they come to fruition. It also squashes the incoming attacks at speeds that are above human capabilities. The benefits of AI go beyond anticipating the attacks (Mosteanu, 2020). Artificial Intelligence makes organizations ready for the proper response at all times since cybercriminals keep intensifying their attacks.

Artificial Intelligence Downside against Fighting Cybercrime

Those opposed to using AI in preventing cybercrime state various reasons why it is detrimental to businesses. 21st-century terrorists no longer need bombs and sophisticated weapons but rather the ability to hack into the company or government systems. Through this, they can bring the operations of critical infrastructure to their knees and acquire a ransom. AI is prone to manipulations that are aimed at causing malfunction. These attacks can be input or poisoning attacks. Poisoning attacks refers to cyber-attack type where hackers exploit Domain Name System (DNS) servers to divert data traffic to fake servers (Li &Zhang, 2017). The input attacks are fed to the AI because the AI System has a machine at its core responsible for manipulating the input to give an output. When the attackers alter the input, then the output is corrupted. The poisoning attacks are manifested by corrupting the process, causing a malfunction desired by the attacker. This can include poisoning the data used in a process. These attacks are capable of causing great harm to the business and affecting the efficiency of operation.

Conclusion

AI was designed to ensure that the system detects and responds to attacks before they cause harm to the business database. However, cybercrime has considerably evolved, and the AI attacks are different from the traditional attacks it was designed to detect. The attacks are sophisticated by the limitations in the algorithms that cannot be fixed, which typically means that AI is not a complete guarantee of cyberattacks’ safety. For example, the attackers can transform a stop sign into green light using an AI attack by using pieces of tape on the sign (Anwar & Hassan, 2017). At the same time, it is possible to weaponize data, requiring the collection, storage, and use of data to be reviewed. AI attacks affect society’s most critical parts, such as the military, law enforcement, and civil society. This threatens the privacy of these institutions, mostly because they deal with critical information. AI security compliance programs must be introduced to protect against this new version of attacks (Soni, 2020). This approach will reduce the risk of successful attacks and lower the impact when they occur. The Regulators should also ensure institutions at high risk of AI attacks have complied with safety policies. This is especially in areas that would have a severe impact on society. This is because AI technologies have brought many high-end attacks, such as Capital One, compromising data of more than 100 million Americans (Mosteanu, 2020). This shows that irrespective of the approach used to mitigate the attacks, they persist.

Importance of AI in fighting Cybercrime

The use of AI in businesses is beneficial because it provides them with abilities to adapt various measures against cybercrime. Through proper technological developments, businesses can stay ahead of the cybercriminals (Clough, 2021). Technologies such as speech recognition and facial recognition software form an important part of enhancing cybersecurity in businesses. This is the reason why many businesses especially financial institutions are using it to prevent fraud. AI helps to broaden the horizon of cyber security solutions for a business and ensuring they do not depend on human capabilities alone (Sagar et al., 2019). When the networks become larger, it becomes impossible to monitor all the activities by the humans. The growing complexity is beyond the capabilities of human beings because the cyber attackers are using technological measures to advance the intensity of their attacks. Therefore, ensuring that the sensitive customer information and data is secure requires that the same measures or even better than those used by cyber criminals are put in place.

AI in cyber security is important because it helps improve the understanding of cybercrime. The security experts can use it in analyzing and studying the trends of the cybercrime (Broadhurst et al., 2019). For example, it helps to keep track of all the attempted attacks in the system for the security analysts to understand the capabilities of the cyber attackers. This helps to form the best defense mechanism before these attacks overcome the security measures put in place. AI also helps to speed up the process of data analysis. For example, the security analysis that when carried out manually take more time can be done in nanoseconds (Soni, 2019). The increased speed of analysis ensures that the threats are captured before they cause any damage to the available resources. Securing the information system through preventive measures is the best approach for a business as it prevents the costs of recovery and restoring the business to its operational status after an attack.

Effectively integrating artificial intelligence into the existing cyber security systems is an effective way of enhancing the security against attacks. This is because it increases the visibility into the system (Varalakshmi, 2020). Creating an accurate biometric-based login for example limits the access into confidential areas. This is because it stores the information of those that are supposed to be granted access and scans their details before they can access the area. AI also detect s the malicious activities in the business environment using the predictive analysis (Siddiqui et al., 2018). The results are that the business has a full visibility of all the threats that can possibly affect it. Through this, the security experts develop the right measures to prevent the occurrence of any successful attacks. With proper AI incorporated into the cyber space, the business is more prepared to handle the uncertainties that may come up in form of cyber-attacks due to the increased visibility and major preventive measures.
