Its true: Your kids are watching, or Our parents are our first teachers

1. Introductory Paragraph

· Hook: Children do the monkey see monkey do metaphor.

· Summary: In “Parents put down your cellphones. Your kids are watching” Jamie Lee Curtis states his solution to kids’ obsessions with their phones starts with the parents. Simply children are copying what their parents do when it comes to cellphones. If parents do not want their children doing what they themselves are doing, they must change it for their children.

· Thesis: I agree with the author because I have experienced the copying my parent phase, self-acceptance is important for your children to see you believe, and the children won’t want to do anything other than what they see you doing on your cellphone. I wanted to do everything my parents were doing. I also agree with his solution is to change what your actions that your children see you do.

2. Body Paragraphs (3-4)

· Paragraph 1: Curtis believes self-acceptance is a big part towards your children. If they see you being sad or whatever you feel because you see people who look better on your phone, they won’t know any better than to be that way. One example of this is “It begins with compare and despair: Think about how it feels when you, as an adult, compare your life to those you see in your Instagram feed.” Which is saying that your children are seeing you compare your life to your Instagram feed and seeing you not be happy with your own life and I agree.

· Paragraph 2: Curtis says cellphones are a problem because most people can’t go MIA or even put the phone down for dinner. Curtis notes, “Insist on unplugging…one. Commit to walking in your house with your family and turning off your phone.” This is true because mainly people struggle putting their phones down. Sometimes even I struggle with it.

· Paragraph 3: Another point that was made about cellphones was that “If our children spend their time looking at us looking at our phones – at ourselves on our phones, for that matter – scrolling constantly all day, telling them that they should do it, too.” The children are just going to do what we do. Curtis also says relating to the first quote, “But the bigger problem is bigger than that: I’m mortified by what I see on a daily basis on people’s social media profiles. There’s an obsession with other people’s personal lives, and people are obsessed with themselves, which children can’t help but pick up on.” I agree with Curtis because this is the truth, many people want to be and look just like these celebrities who are obsessed with their bodies and they see this on their media feed and become unhappy with their own body.

3. Conclusion:

· Curtis explains his point of view on cellphones and how they affect our children. One, the children copy everything we do. Two, most people can’t even put their phones down for dinner with their family. Last, if our children see us obsessing with our feeds and not being attentive to them which they won’t forget. I agree with this author because he makes sense and has points that go with the problem he has with cellphones. “Self-acceptance is the key to being a ground ed human being: This is me, this is my body, this is the body God gave me.” Curtis states.
