Argumentative Essay Instructions
You are required to submit this assignment once and it must meet the assignment prompt to be graded.
You may make two attempts if you choose. This will allow you to receive qualitative feedback that can help
you improve your submission.

If you submit two attempts, your highest grade of the two attempts will be used to calculate your
overall grade (so a second attempt can only help you).
After you submit your assignment once, a 2nd Attempt Turnitin assignment link (Optional) will
become available. Use this 2nd Attempt link to submit your second attempt.
When resubmitting your assignment, avoid focusing solely on the grader’s draft feedback; use the
feedback as a supplement to the course lessons and your own revision ideas. Always expect to
revise beyond what the grader specically notes.

https://moodle.straighterline.com/mod/page/view.php?id=84224 2/4

Write an argumentative essay on one of the following options:

Option #1: Does Technology Promote Loneliness?
Develop a thesis statement built upon whether or not technology promotes loneliness. You should focus
on either one form of hardware or one type of software. For example, you could target cell phones or
laptops. If you want to look more into software, you could narrow your discussions to one type of social
media or one gaming app. These are just a handful of a vast array of options you could choose.

Develop at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this
resource can assist you in developing the counterargument and refutation). This organization should yield
four body paragraphs. Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can
help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. The beginning of a sample topic sentence might
be, “First, Facebook does not promote loneliness because….” Then, be sure to support that claim with a
point or two of researched data, followed by mostly original material that helps to explain how your
research supports your claims as well as provides new insights and perspectives. Conclude each
paragraph with a sentence that synthesizes the paragraph’s main ideas.

Sample Thesis Statement: Social media, particularly Facebook, does not promote loneliness because (add
argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument focus). *Note
that a thorough thesis statement will include the counterargument in addition to your own arguments, but
be sure to frame your counterargument as the opposition’s opinion so that readers do not think that you are
changing your stance.

See The Top Ten Tips for College-Level Writing (Presentation) for more thesis statement assistance.

Use at least three credible sources (the author should be considered an expert on the topic in which he or
she writes; try Google Scholar to search), such as books, articles, and websites, to support your thesis.
Include a mix of cited paraphrases, summaries, and quotes in your argumentative research paper. Use MLA
format (Tip: You will nd useful MLA resources within the course topics, particularly in Topic 9) to create
proper parenthetical citations as well as a Works Cited page at the end of your essay. For additional Works
Cited assistance visit http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/ and use the left navigation

Option #2: Is Citizen Privacy or National Security More Important?
Develop a thesis statement focused on determining if citizen privacy or national security is more
important. You can choose any country or region. Your chosen topic needs to be specic and might
address a question like the ones you see in these examples:

Should ocials make citizens’ privacy more of a priority than national security? Why or why not?
Is national security likely to pose a risk for citizen privacy? Why or why not?
You may choose another topic regarding the relationship between citizen privacy and national
security as well; just be sure that your main thesis addresses the association between these two
ideas.

The beginning of a sample topic sentence might
be, “Primarily, exceptional national security is likely to reduce citizen privacy because….” Then, be sure to
support that claim with a point or two of researched data, followed by mostly original material that helps to
explain how your research supports your claims as well as provides new insights and perspectives.
Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that synthesizes the paragraph’s main ideas.

Sample Thesis Statement: Ideally, a thesis would include the major assignment objectives for the essay,
which in this case would be your claim/opinion, reasons why you have that opinion, and the
counterargument: Implementing national security measures could lead to citizen privacy dilemmas
because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument
focus). *Note that a thorough thesis statement will include the counterargument in addition to your own
arguments, but be sure to frame your counterargument as the opposition’s opinion so that readers do not
think that you are changing your stance.

Use at least three credible sources (the author should be considered an expert on the topic in which he or
she writes), such as books, articles, and websites, to support your claims. Include a mix of cited
paraphrases, summaries, and quotes in your argumentative research paper. Use MLA format (Tip: You will
nd useful MLA resources within the course topics, particularly in Topic 9) to create proper parenthetical
citations as well as a Works Cited page at the end of your essay. For additional Works Cited assistance

narrowed.

A counter-argument section for this paper should explain what the opposition believes, and it is the
opposite of the opinion you are arguing in your paper. For example, if you are arguing that anti-plagiarism
software should not be used in college classes, then the counterargument would be that anti-plagiarism
software should be used. Then in your refutation, try to prove the counterargument false, insignicant, or
unimportant with researched information that is new to the essay (avoid recycling facts from a previous
argument in the essay).

Does Technology Promote Loneliness?

Technological advancements in society have eradicated face-to-face communication between people. Today, technology and its components have become a significant part of societal functioning. Most people in contemporary society will depend on technology and other social networking to perform their tasks effectively. For instance, students will rely on the internet for research, while individuals in the corporate world will depend on technology for enhanced business operations. The perspective has changed how people interact with others, especially because of the networking options. For instance, more people and organizations use Facebook as an appropriate platform of interaction and increased connectivity. In such a way, Facebook has greatly reshaped how individuals connect and primarily led to establishing a home for some people. In most cases, social networking has been associated with promoting loneliness, but I feel this is not the case—loneliness results in mental problems ranging from anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. On the contrary, Facebook as a social media platform does more good than harm to human mental well-being. Facebook does not promote loneliness; instead, it allows community members to find a space to anonymously share hidden aspects of their personality, develop self-confidence and social skills, and remain informed and entertained even though most people will risk being lonely 1with the aim of becoming e-famous.

Individuals in society sometimes go through tough experiences that are not easy to talk about with other people. Essentially, the people fear that their experiences are not safe and opening to others would only do more harm than good. Through the Facebook social platform, individuals can create anonymous identity difficult for people to recognize person’s true identity. In such a way, people feel protected, safe, and connected to others who could be going through similar experiences. Hence, anonymity provides room for interaction with hidden personality aspects that cannot otherwise be revealed in the real world (Andalibi and Andrea Forte). Such discussions could be effective in providing the correct guidance, therefore, overcoming the barrier of opening up in face-to-face conversations.

Second, some individuals will use Facebook media to feel connected to society because they are lonely. Most importantly, Facebook provides individuals a chance to grow and develop their self-confidence and social skills (Metzler and Herbert Scheithauer). For instance, when a person is shy, they are more likely to have fewer social interactions and be lonely. Fortunately, Facebook gives this group of people the liberty to choose how they express their concerns online based on a given perspective in life. In such a way, an individual who lacks social skills has the opportunity to interact and establish relationships online. Besides, when people seek refuge on the Facebook platform, they are allowed sufficient time to look at messages, which could help them clear their head or establish an enhanced conversation with another person.

Furthermore, Facebook has become a hub of information and ideas. It informs the reader of the important and relatively current events. At the same time, it acts as a great source of entertainment continues to encourage discovery so that if an individual is interested in a certain activity, their activity will be catered for by the social networking service or the group within a service. Facebook brings together individuals to develop their interests and find people who share similar interests (Vale and Teresa Fernandes). Therefore, individuals with common interests are brought together, promoting enhanced innovation and recreation.

However, even when Facebook has been identified to reduce loneliness, it has sometimes been used to show its users’ unreal side. Users have the free will to control what they share with others. Therefore it does not fulfill the relationships and connection needs. Although the platform provides us with significant human support, the quality support provided is not enough. Thus, individuals, despite having enhanced connections, will end up feeling lonely. This is because technology will only make it easy for people to stay in touch, but the connection is kept distant. In such a way, most people will only stay connected to become e-famous.

Technology does not promote loneliness

Vale, Leonor, and Teresa Fernandes. “Social media and sports: driving fan engagement with football clubs on Facebook.” Journal of Strategic Marketing 26.1 (2018): 37-55.

According to Leonor and Fernandes, social media networking has widened the information and entertainment scope online. In such a way, sports introduction in these platforms works to benefit the sports fans developing unique and engaging relationships with their sports teams such as football online and offline. Understanding why and how sports fans engage with clubs on social media is essential towards evaluating the effectiveness of Facebook as a source of entertainment or a tool that brings individuals with a common interest together to promote happiness and enhanced innovations. Sports teams consider in the highest regard their fan engagement because of the sports branding promoted online through team-fan relationships. Online networking systems then are used to strengthen brand loyalty and, importantly, increase the revenue generation towards supporting sporting activities. In the rise of social networking, an enhanced need to have a systematic approach that understands the positive implications fan or Facebook uses gain from engaging in online sports activities.

The research study indicates that Facebook users are in most cases motivated to use the platform to gather more information about what they are most interested in, for entertainment, to create personal identity, integrate and interact with others, be empowered, others seek remuneration while others do so for their brand love. Hence, sporting for information, empowerment, and brand love mainly leads to enhanced consumption, contribution, and creation of sporting activities online. Significantly another part of those engaging in online sports seeks integration and social interactions with people who share a similar interest in the world. Leonor and Fernandes from this research found out that prosocial behaviors have an enhanced relevance in the fan engagement for football fans using the Facebook platform, suggesting fans’ need to interact and connect with other like-minded people.

Metzler, Anna, and Herbert Scheithauer. The Long-Term Benefits Of Positive Self-Presentation Via Profile Pictures, Number Of Friends And The Initiation Of Relationships On Facebook For Adolescents’ Self-Esteem And The Initiation Of Offline Relationships. 2017, https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2017.01981/full. Accessed 14 Apr 2021.

According to Anna and Scheithauer, social networking has become a significant part of today’s lives. The adolescent stage has traditionally been considered a development phase when there are strong peer influences among young people. During this technological era in life, it is essential to understand the impact of positive behavior on Facebook and how it affects adolescents’ self-confidence and social skills. From the study, a positive self-representation in Facebook yields positive feedback from the Facebook community. This encourages enhanced social interactions that promote individual social skills for individuals who are shy. Therefore, integrating the different processes used during adolescents’ identity recognition and social skills development yields positive social implications. Online relationships have a direct positive implication on the initiation of enhanced offline relationships; in this case, individuals whose first interaction encounter was on Facebook could extend their interactions and relationships at personal levels. On the other hand, the friends created online are closely and positively associated with how adolescents can develop their self-confidence over time. Hence, Facebook has been identified as a training ground through which young adults can gain practical social skills mainly because it is less threatening than face-to-face interactions.

Facebook utilization for social interaction helps build positive effects on an individual’s psychosocial development (Anna and Scheithauer). Thus, the notion that Facebook promotes loneliness because an appropriate environment has been created to encourage connectivity between people and enhanced personal identity and developments. The self-presentation on Facebook has effectively allowed individuals to build on their self-esteem, especially when they receive positive feedback about their profile pictures. Based on these online achievements on developing strong positive attitudes and self-esteem, individuals will be less lonely.
