The Washington Legislature has decided to slash the state budget by halving the size of the UWB IAS program. In response (and much to your surprise), the UWB administration has decided to determine who gets cut from the program by asking Paulo Freire to review the “Goals Statement” of each recently admitted student. 

Write Freire’s letter to you explaining what happened and why you are currently on the “admissions bubble” (not rejected, but not yet admitted). Then write an appeal of that decision in which you argue for your readmission. (Freire, as it turns out, will be overseeing the appeal process as well.) Feel free to explain things you wish to change in your original goal statement as well things that you want to highlight.

In the letter be sure to make clear your current learning goals and objectives, and how achieving them will contribute not only to your personal growth and success, but also to society. You are also welcome to discuss what you think about the entire process and the organization of higher education in the state, across the country and around the world (remember Paulo Freire will decide what happens in the end). The point of this essay is for you to explore in as much depth as possible the logic that underwrites Freire’s thinking about the educational system and process, and the “students-teachers” role in it. 

I will be evaluating your essay based on how clearly, creatively, and persuasively you are able to synthesize and apply his complex thinking to this pragmatic context. The essay should be 750 words in length, double-spaced with reasonable margins and font size, and should include a title at the beginning. 

If possible, please include a copy of your original “Goals Statement” (the essay you wrote to get into IAS or UWB). If you don’t have your original statement, please DO NOT ask for a copy of it from the IAS or admissions offices; this will only be considered a hassle for them.
