Last week, all of our activities were focused on determining the best training method to deliver our training program.

We reviewed the traditional training methods and decided to choose the lecture/discussion model as the most appropriate training method. This was based on the two initial variables: cost and time of execution.

We have only three weeks left to conduct this training program. So this was a good short-term strategy. However, we should review other types of training methods to address any long-term training needs.

Besides the traditional training methods, Taormina may want to consider Computer-based training or CBT.

After reviewing CBT, we will proceed to develop and implement our training program.

Deborah: The Computer-based training method, or CBT, refers to any training that occurs through the use of a computer. Such training could be delivered to trainees through e-learning systems such as LANs, CDs, DVDs, intranet, and the Internet.

Some of the advantages of the CBT method are: reduction of the cost of delivering training, more instructional consistency, and easy tracking of trainees’ learning progress.

However, there are some disadvantages, such as the cost of new technology, low interactivity, and the technical limitation of the trainees.

Computer-based training, with its affordability and easy access, is a new medium for learning. Thousands of companies use these systems to instruct new employees.

Now, let’s review each CBT method.

Programmed Instruction (PI)

Consists of text, graphics, and multimedia enhancements that are stored in memory and connected to one another electronically.

Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instruction (ICAI)

A more advanced form of Programmed Instruction. The ICAI is used to run tutoring aspects of the training and monitor trainee knowledge within a programmed knowledge model.

Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS)

Makes use of artificial intelligence to provide tutoring. The ITS tailors the learning experience based on the trainee’s responses.

Simulations

Provides a representation of a situation and the task to be performed in the situation.

Virtual Reality

An advanced form of computer simulation, placing the trainee in simulated environments that are “virtually” the same as the physical environment.

Remember, depending on the complexity of the business and its technological structure, these CBT methods may or may not be integrated as part of a learning management system.

A learning management system is a software application that manages the content of the training and records the progress of trainees.

Well! We know that Taormina is not ready for a CBT yet based on time and cost.

But just suppose Taormina was ready to use a CBT method. Based on the training needs analysis you conducted in Week 4, which CBT method do you consider the most appropriate to address Taormina’s training need?

Remember, our need is the lack of communication among co-workers and supervisors. This is a behavior issue.

Now that we have finished discussing training methods, it’s time to develop and implement our training.

Developing
our training will entail using the guidelines from the design phase to formulate an instructional strategy. This phase also involves obtaining or creating appropriate materials that are necessary for the training program.

Implementing
our training will involve bringing together all of the previous phases of the training process model.

Our first step is to formulate an instructional strategy.

Instructional strategy is a listing of all the elements of the training program. This includes the individual modules, their organization, timing, methods, trainers, and material to be used.

Instructional strategy is a written document, often called a training plan.

We should ask Ron to help us in the development of the instructional strategy.

Ron: Hi Deborah!

Deborah: Hi Ron! We are already developing the training plan and we would like your input here.

We need to determine where to conduct the training and the training material. Also, we need to determine the equipment and furniture setup needed to conduct our training program.

Ron: It sounds like we are almost ready to launch the training!

Deborah: Yes, Ron. We are almost done! Remember, we have only three weeks to go.

Ron: That’s good news! So what’s next?

Deborah: We decided that my training specialist would be the trainer for this training program. My training specialist has the skills and knowledge that we require.

What we need to decide is the logistics such as the training modules, the agenda of the training, and the training room.

Ron: Okay. Let’s invite Alex and together we can outline the components of the training plan.

Deborah: Great idea!

Even though we cannot use any of the training methods reviewed today, we concluded that simulations could be the most appropriate method to address Taormina’s training need. Taormina will want to consider simulations as a future training method.

In addition, we covered the development and implementation of our training program. We reviewed the components of an instructional strategy or training plan. We also considered the use of the Experiential Learning Model.
