Hi class,

Pollution is one of the biggest problems in my community, for 7 years straight my borough has been ranked number 1 on the topmost polluted cities in NY by the American Lung Association. Having the number 10 in all of US right next to us does not help either. I know, it’s just plain horrible, but cleaning up my community will be a task for a thousand armies and a half. Where can we start, one My city is well over populated and in order to accommodate the people, housing needs to be built leading to construction leading to pollution, along with people comes commute which comes with vehicles which also comes with pollution, and due to over population we have heavy traffic especially at peak hours meaning a lot of idling engines ( this aspect will get better over time as modern vehicles are have many eco features) After taking this class I have also started to realize signs stating $2,500 fines for idling engines over a minute mainly around schools. Which is great but I do not believe they are enforced, so that would be a start enforcing the rules that are already Implied I’ve actually thought of becoming and part time auxiliary police officer to help enforce these rules. Large trucks are also a problem they create traffic and idle and create a large amount of pollution in the area, to add on to this the zoning is horrible in NY there is a lot of industrial zones near homes and schools, one of the major industrial zone is “Hunts Point” 10- 15 minutes from my home, and trucks are in and out of this area as well. Let’s elude from some things that are slight out of our control, and target some of which that are such as; smokers, there is a high number of smoking residents in my community of all ages and not to mention “Los Hookeros” ( Spanish slang for hookah smokers) they are all over parks, parties, people even do it while driving, it is a huge cigarette machine with flavor. The city has tried to control this and put an age restraint on who can purchase and smoke hookah as well by making it illegal to smoke hookah in certain areas. This could be the reason, for the large uprise of asthma in our youth and in the

breathing problems in our elders. The city has been trying to go green as time goes by, there are motivating signs encouraging to take public transportation and opt to take the stairs or get off a bus stop or train stop early and walk a few blocks, they have even added tolls to enter certain parts of the city, reducing drivers into the city in which reduces traffic, reduces pollution, and better for people’s health. Something I have thought of is starting community competition events such as setting up events with exercises circuits with everyday household appliances, tools or products as the prizes. To promote health, nothing big but it’s a start and I could set up a statewide scoreboard where everyone can keep track of the scores, and it would motivate them to compete. No smoking, no hookahs no liquor nothing of that sort will be allowed just good music, good food and good vibes. but what I was surprised to find is that Florida was not on that list what’s so ever maybe that is why they do not emphasize on the recycling at least in Tampa, but as I look into it further Most Florida cities appear in the cleanest cities section which I agree with but also caught me by surprise especially to find Tampa as one of the cities on the list for the cleanest, meaning with a little more effort they can be top 5.

Hi Class,

Recently in a town about 10 miles away a clinic has opened a walk-in clinic that will offer low cost health care to those in need as well as to those that need to be seen immediately without having to go to the hospital, which can result in higher costs and exposure to other sicknesses. The college also holds a health fair that is open to the public and runs basic blood tests for individuals for a low price. This can help prevent disease and catch sicknesses early. The state of Colorado also offers Colorado plus our version of Medicaid for individuals and families that are applicable.  The community I live in is rural and small. Our neighboring town has recently closed the Emergency room that cares for any intense or critical injuries or sicknesses. If immediate care is needed individuals must be transported via ambulance or flight for life to Colorado Springs which is about 130 miles away or even Denver which is even farther away. This could lead to death and possibly even worsening of conditions. After considering the medical downsides there are also much more financial hardships that are left for the patients. In the community there is not much that has been effectively done for health services.

      Pollution and contamination do play a small role in the health of members of the community. The availability of clean water has been an ongoing issue for the community that has also been linked to sicknesses. Air quality is also a known issue that really affects everyone. Air pollution is done practical everywhere that has some type of industrialization. Roadways are constantly being worked on releasing harmful particles into the air. There are a couple factories that also are adding to this not to mention the use of vehicles to commute.  In 2013 Crowley and Otero created a Health Status report and improvement plan. The plan reviewed safety, health, environment quality, and even social factors. This improvement plan brought to light some of the issues that are growing in our community. Although this was a step in the right direction it was short lived. The report sought obesity as a top priority in Otero county with 73% of Otero residents obese compared to 58% of Colorado residents (Department, Otero County Health, 2013).  There has been an increase in fast food restaurants in the area, which are linked to obesity. The community can offer more recreational activities for people of all ages to keep them active. Opening a healthy option for “fast food”. Knowledge of the issue can also help prevent expansion, especially when considering diseases. If people know that doing “this” will lead to cancer (for example) they are likely to slow down or possibly even stop doing that particular thing.
