John Bowlby (1907-1991) presented the theory of attachment to explain the emotional bonds between infants and mothers. Attachment is a term that encompasses an individual’s attachment status and quality, and attachment behavior refers to a series of behavioral patterns in which specific discrimination occurs to approach or maintain access to a favorite person (Bretherton, 1992). Attachment behavior is triggered by separation from or attachment risk. These attachments and attachment behaviors form the basis of the attachment behavior system. The attachment behavior system is a representation of oneself and other people and relationships and refers to the blueprint or model seen by the individual (Bretherton, 1992).
According to Bowlby, attachment is the most important form of social development that occurs in infancy and is an intimate emotional bond formed between infants and nurturers (Holmes, 2017). This desire for emotional solidarity is a fundamental part of human experience and is important because it serves the biological purpose of preserving the race. A child who has established a stable attachment with a caregiver will make the attachment a security base through early social signaling systems such as sucking, crying, smiling, hanging, and following and physical contact behavior (Bretherton, 1992).
People who had a secure attachment with the caregiver in childhood were found to have stronger self-esteem and self-reliance in later life while failing to build secure attachment found to have low self-esteem and experience difficulties to have an intimate relationship with others when they grow up. For the client reported struggles in the attachment relationship with parents in developing secure attachment during childhood with the parents, attachment theory can be conceptualized and use to pick up the specific difficulties the client is experiencing and to work on through counseling.
