First, I want you to copy one paragraph from your Paper I: Study One Literature Review and paste it into your discussion forum for this chapter (I prefer you do the opening paragraph, but you can actually copy any paragraph except the final paragraph). Whichever paragraph you copy, it MUST have one citation in it (I’ll tell you why in the next paragraph). Then I want you to give feedback to two other students about their paragraph. It can be positive feedback, but it would be more helpful to give them some hints about ways it can be improved. If there are APA formatting errors, please let them know.

Second, I want you to provide a reference for the article you cited in your copied paragraph.  I want each group member to create two references for the same paper you cited in your copied paragraph. ONE of these references should have correct APA formatting and the other should have incorrect APA formatting (for example, it can have an incorrect & somewhere; it can have first names of authors included; it might have italics for words that should not be italicized, etc.) Label one as A and the other as B, and post both in your group discussion after your copied paragraph. When giving feedback to your two group members, tell them which reference you think is correct and which one you think is incorrect and why you think the second one is incorrect.

FAQ’s about group “Slackers, Freeloaders and Just Wrong-Wrong-Wrong Responders”

1). So what happens if a group member either fails or is late in providing an individual

assignment?

Well … that student loses 5 points for the individual assignment, which cannot be

made up. This individual can still work with the group on the group discussion

and receive 10 points for Part II, but the most they can get for the chapter is 10

out of 15 points.

2). What if I submit my individual assignment (and get those 5 points!) but I don’t want to

join the group discussion?

Well … you can attempt the group assignment on your own, but because some of

the group questions require interacting with the group, your Part II will be

incomplete. You also run the risk of having inaccurate responses, something that

will occur less frequently when you work with your group.

3). What if I joined the class late and missed out on the first few discussions?

Well … I can accommodate this. You can submit your answers individually for

both the individual assignment (Part I) and the group assignments (Part II) if you

joined the course late for full discussion points (this extension expires four days

after you join the course, at which time you will forfeit the points). E-mail me

immediately when you join so that I can add you to a discussion group.

I have a few suggestions and notes:

FIRST, some discussion questions will not have a single correct answer while others are based

on statistical reasoning or objective criteria. Either way, your answers should be meaningful and

well-reasoned.

SECOND, I recommend that you designate a group leader for each discussion. In fact, you will

sign a group contract at the beginning of the semester and “sign up” for two or more group leader

slots. The leader can facilitate the discussion for all group members and even write up the final

group submission (though remember that each individual member must submit their own Part II

assignment). Keep in mind that all members can (and should) contribute to the content of Part II.

Also, note that while you work with your group on the new questions, you can also revise your

answers from your individual assignment should your group members find that your prior

responses were inaccurate, incomplete, or lacking in quality.

THIRD, for the statistical calculations you will do in some of the discussions, the individual

assignments should be illuminating. If you all get the same answer, great – you understood it! If

your answers differ, your discussion might help to figure out who is right (and who is wrong!)

FOURTH, if you are group leader for a week and find that you cannot follow-through with your

leader responsibility, you can switch your leader role with another group member. However, you

and the student you are swapping with must e-mail your instructor about the swap no later than

72 hours before Part II is due.

FIFTH, there is no penalty for submitting early! If you want to submit Part I on Monday, great!

No need to wait until Thursday. If you and your group want to submit Part II on Friday and save

yourself from working over the weekend, feel free to do so! I actually encourage early

submissions, though we will not grade any submissions until after the due date has passed.
