Project Step 1
READ the provided play for entertainment value only.
Let your mind take you into a new world. Enjoy the characters and the
storyline that is provided. You may begin to visualize the set, costumes,
props, etc.; however, the first read is to simply read the script for
entertainment.
Project Step 2
READ the provided play for ideas with design.
Think about set design: What items are needed to tell the story? Where will
the actors enter and exit? When does the play take place? Where? Begin to
brainstorm and rough sketch things that are necessary to make the set
design a success and functional.
Think about costumes: What character wears what? How will the costumes
tell us a story about the character’s background, likes, interest, status, etc.
Who are all the characters? Do they have multiple costumes? Rough sketch
your ideas.
Project Step 2, Cont.
Think about props: What properties are necessary to enhance and tell the
story? Is any set dressing needed? Are the props costume props, set props,
set-dressing props, hand-held props, special effects props, etc.? Begin
making a prop list. Rough sketch some ideas you have.
Think about your concept. Theme. Style. Ex: Western, Shakespearean,
Great Depression, 50s, Roaring 20s, Steampunk, Fairy Tale, etc.
Project Step 3
Develop a GROUND PLAN (top view) for one location in the play.
Some plays have multiple locations; however, for this assignment, we will
just be choosing one location. Be sure to include all required set pieces.
Look over your rough sketch ideas. Add to or take away as needed. You
must include all set pieces that are required to tell the story. (Walls, doors,
windows, furniture, etc.) Include a key or label each item. This does not
have to be done to scale for this assignment.
This will be done in Google Drawings.
Project Step 4
Develop a FRONT VIEW that matches your ground plan (top view).
Front views must give the illusion of depth. They are drawn in color. This
view must follow the ground plan (top view) exactly. This is the look that an
audience member would see if they were sitting in the seats looking at the
stage.
This will be done in your choice of medium.
(Google Drawing and Sketchup
are great sources.)
Project Step 5
Develop a COSTUME SKETCH for your chosen characters. (2 for this
assignment)
Costume sketches must be done in color and include all required items to
correctly clothe the actor. Think head to toe. Include type of shoes, any
head pieces, and costume props (canes, eye patch, etc.).
This will be done in your choice of medium.
Project Step 6
Complete the PROPS LIST of all required props. (See attachment.)
This should include the prop itself, act/scene it is located in, script page(s),
description of the prop, where the prop begins, where the prop ends, and any
notes. Some shows have few props, others have many.
Fill out the fillable form to submit in schoology.
*Props must be listed in the order they appear in the script.
Project Step 7
Design items to promote your production. This is known as PUBLICITY.
You must design a full page flyer, a playbill (program), and a show ticket.
This can be done in any medium you choose. My recommendation is
canva.com. It can be downloaded from the app store or used by entering
canva.com.

○ Short paragraph titled “Director’s Comments.” (make up the information)
○ At least three rules of the theatre. (Ex. Turn off all cell phones.)
○ Special Thanks. (Minimum of 3)

● Playwright (who wrote it).

Present your PORTFOLIO.
Attach all of your designs to an online portfolio. This can be done in a
google slides, online free website, etc. Make sure you are including the
following:

2 Costume Sketches 1 Props List
1 Flyer 1 Playbill
1 Ticket
Project Step 9 (NOT AT THIS TIME)
Develop a MODEL of your set.
Using your choice of materials and display, you are to create a model of your
set. For this assignment, it does not have to be to scale. This could be done in a
shoe box or on foam board.
