Remember that you can combine two of the parts in the Introduction or Conclusion, such as combining the brakelight and the recap into one point or combining the common ground and credibility like the sample outline.

DEMONSTRATION SPEECH ASSIGNMENT

The demonstration speech is essentially a speech to inform, you assume the role of a teacher. Your ultimate desired response is to gain audience understanding of a process or procedure. In selecting your subject, take care to narrow the material to the restrictions of time and audience familiarity with the subject. Students should make sure they present the steps of your process/demonstration clearly and systematically. In planning your demonstration, make your rehearsal as realistic as possible. During the actual demonstration, allow for the maximum amount of activity required for performing the act as it would be performed elsewhere. Demonstration speeches give detailed information about processes so that listeners can repeat them. A good demonstration adds clarity and life to the speech.

Tips for the demonstration speech:

· Know the process well

· Check your demonstration materials before the speech.

· Put the steps in order and be careful to address audience and not demonstration materials.

· Define new or unfamiliar terms or tools—don’t assume your audience knows

· Show steps visually by using your visual aids/materials.

· Clearly explain the purpose of each step

· Have an attention getter

· Clearly work through your demonstration with step by step process using visual aids as support and remember the spoken word must accompany and supplement the act of demonstrating.

· Have a memorable conclusion.

Prepare a Demonstration Speech from Three to Five minutes in length and demonstrate how something is prepared, made, or done. You MUST use at least one visual aid for this assignment. Prepare a full-sentence outline including an introduction, body, and conclusion (See example).

Submit the typed full sentence outline to me BEFORE you deliver your speech. The body of your speech should have two to three main points. Use 4×6 note/cue cards and deliver your speech extemporaneously.

This speech should not be read or memorized and should use minimal notes. This speech will be videotaped and you will write a self-critique.

This assignment includes:

A. Typed full sentences outline = 5 pts.

B. Note/Cue cards = 5 pts.

C. Visual aids = 10 pts.

D. A 3-5 min. extemporaneous speech = 75 pts.
