Introduction
What is the issue, where, when, why is it important?
This paper will ….
Below is an example!
In the city of Atlanta, children are being impacted by their environments. In the streets, gun violence is tearing families apart and in the home, family violence is tearing apart their mental. In 2019, there were about 28,769 violent crimes committed in the city of Atlanta (neighborhoodscout.com) probably more. Throughout a child’s life being violently exposed has a major impact on their developmental growth. As they grow older, parents are programmed into believing that their child has some form of a disorder. The two most common behavior disorders in the Black community are ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and ODD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Most children have anxiety, but oftentimes parents aren’t familiar with what anxiety may look like in children. Research has shown that early traumatic experiences can and will cause prolonged stress responses that will eventually precede an increased risk of diseases. Such diseases are known as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. It has been found that “adverse childhood experiences” (ACEs) consist of, abuse, neglect, growing up with a parent who may be mentally ill, substance-dependent, parental separation, or divorce (gene.com). Consequently, any of these listed adversities will affect the child’s sleeping, learning, and health. Sadly, the children, adolescents, and families in Atlanta are affected by adversity.
Describe the identified need
Below is an example:
Majority of the students attending alternative schools have learning disabilities or histories of poverty, abuse, or neglect. These students would benefit from additional educational and counseling services. Instead, they are isolated, punished, and pushed out (School to Prison Pipeline, 2019). It is not fair to them to be deprived of a proper education. Yes, adolescents tend to make bad decisions when their emotions get the best of them, but there are ways to change that. For those teens that are placed in alternative schools that are the “wannabes” and the perpetrators that were mentioned at the beginning of this text, I have an intervention that I would like to see done. Due to the fact that the system is after our youth, I want to see my future presidents, congressman, and etc. successful. I feel like I have a way to steer them back on the track to success. After spending time at an alternative school, I got to interact with the students and see the needs and wants that they are not receiving. If they were attending a traditional school, their desires would be fulfilled. I would like to implement an Alternative Schools Scared Straight Program that will simply act as the famous TV show, Beyond Scared Straight. The only difference is that the students will be given a mentor(s) that allows them to speak to someone who was once in their shoes and for them to see where they could end up. By participating in this program, it would allow the inmates to shorten their sentences as well. So, it is a win-win situation for the both of them. The inmate is changing a life, and the student is getting their life back on the right track. This is an opportunity that I am sure that both would take without a doubt. Just like on Beyond Scared Straight the parent, or guardian must give consent to the student to participate in the program which entails motivation, learning, and them being in an environment that they do not want to return to. This should be in all alternative schools for the Alternative Schools Scared Straight 4students who are there for being “bad” and for the ones who claim to be gang affiliated. A lot can change from the time they enter the jail to when they leave the jail. The toughest individual can come out a totally different and changed person.
What type of needs assessment(s) will be most appropriate?
Below is an example
As a constituent of Congressman John Lewis’s 5th district and Senator Nan Orrock 36th district; the first rule of action is to present statistical data on adversities in their community. Work with the volunteers of both Senator Orrock and Congressman Lewis to provide data found on the impact toxic stress has on the children of the community. Since Senator Orrock is on the committee for health and human services, having her understand the importance of the Resilient Beginnings Collaborative will guide pediatric healthcare in a better direction. In addition to that, Congressman Lewis supports legislation and initiatives that will help children, women, and families. By being able to present the RBC to Congressman Lewis, this will provide opportunities for further research to be done on how RBC will be beneficial to children and low-income families affected by adversities. With the help of Congressman Lewis and Senator Orrock, the Resilient Beginnings Collaborative initiative should be implemented for starters in the Children, Adolescent, and Family Healthcare Center located in East Point. Since this clinic is located in John Lewis district, asking for federal funds and filling out grants would be a feasible option. By acquiring federal funds for this clinic a data collecting system would have to be put in place to back up the claims presented above. Implementing mandatory ACE studies on the children in the clinic will help get to the root problem. When something is scary or stressful, the first thing a child is going to do is go into fight or flight mode. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris found that a child who has four or more adverse childhood experiences is double times more likely for heart disease, depression, suicide, and other risky diseases (gene.com). If the brain is always in overdrive and the providers have no background information, it could prolong treatment processes. Hence, the importance of implementing the Resilient Beginnings Collaborative initiative.
Provide a rationale supporting how you will engage the community
Here is an example
:
Clark Atlanta University has security stations and gates surrounding the dorms of Holmes Hall, Merner Hall, and Pfeiffer Hall. Although these are all women dorms and underclassmen, it lacks the support of an inclusive view and right for all students that attend CAU. There’s a lack of protection with the other dorms that often leads towards violent acts, such as shootings, robbery, vandalism, and death. During my freshman year, there were experiences of many students getting their cars broken into, and getting robbed at gunpoint. My sophomore consisted of many of my classmates being robbed for their iPhone and money. My junior year consisted of murder, in which an athlete was killed in the back on Beckwith Street, near dorms. My senior year consisted of a vicious shooting at a block party in front of the library. During this incident injuring two CAU students and one Spelman student. Every year has consisted of a major event that contributes towards students not feeling safe within their learning environments. Upon these events, it has contributed towards negative outlooks from the society that our school is unsafe, however, the school has yet to improve situations after these catastrophic events. Commonly, students received emails to “be on the lookout for” or “there’s been a robbery near you” emails from public safety. A recent study in 2018 shows that”80.8% of all incidents occurred on-campus. 19.2% of all incidents occurred in the Atlanta neighborhood surrounding the campus. None of all incidents occurred off campus but while on school affiliated property” (Crime (2020 April 30). Many of these statistics consisted of people who did not attend Clark Atlanta University, showing the troublesome high statistic make CAU a dangerous university to attend. Although it is very common for students to not report these crimes it is also shown that Clark Atlanta University reported “42 safety-related incidents involving students while on campus in 2018. Of the 4,210 colleges and universities that reported crime and safety data, 3,083 of them reported fewer incidents than this” (Crime (2020 April 30) The high statistical values of just two years ago show that there is a high need of change to assist the students in protection.
Provide a rationale supporting the need for a community intervention
Here is an example
The goal is to find a solution to a problem. I will be doing a project management plan that will give data over a period of one semester to the next, a one academic year. The information received from the data will be detailed with children’s reaction to classical music as the start of the day begins. There are so many children that are having a hard time grasping the concept of their academics because they’re so busy concerned with unrelated school situations, whether it be from home or school. Some children may be suffering from mental issues, social emotional issues or just stress in general. With music being introduced within the curriculum, it offers a unique opportunity for children to develop empathy, to express their feelings better, and helps them to be fully immersed within different experiences, also to feel empowered (Rubin & Babbie, 2016). Teachers need the ability to have control over
3their students. I believe that music will give teachers the ability to gain that control. There are so many positive aspects to music, that I believe could possibly change the child’s whole perception of the way in which they tend to perceive life outside of school. What I am proposing is that music just may be the solution to reducing the fear of alienation or expand socialization and improve competency or even coping skills.
What ethical standards will guide your engagement and assessment of the community?
Here is an example!
What ethical standards will guide your engagement and assessment of the community? Monitoring and assessments that would be used for this course would be informed consent papers allowing each individual’s information to be confidential in this course. This would reflect with each participant’s charges as well. Allowing participants to feel as comfortable as possible will be our number one goal. While conducting this course we will make sure that participants are fully aware and understand the process. Participants should understand that this course does not get them out of the trouble they are currently in but to prepare them for the future and to be more aware of their rights. Having competence is also important. We challenge each participant to understand the quality and state to having sufficient knowledge, judgment, skill, or strength when dealing with the legal system. Cultural awareness and diversity is also essential when dealing with participants in this course.
What aspects of diversity and difference are relevant to understanding this community, and how will you incorporate this into your plan?
It is stated that Afrocentric learning environments in a circular model teach and learn better than the Eurocentric model of rows and columns. In respect to our African heritage,
KINGSMEN SANCTUARY BARBERSHOP Garrett 7furniture arrangements in the shop will in a circular frame. $20,000 will be budgeted for furniture and basic equipment. There will be 10 grooming chairs, 10 equipment chests, with one chair for private sessions in the back. There will be 4 washing bowls, a mirror for each station, a professional pool table, two 55” inch TV’s, a miniature library and artwork of profound African American figures along with a number of neighborhood hero’s. To encourage Afrocentricity, there will be black and gold crowns painted on the walls with strips of the same color sporadically painted on the walls. Next to the library will be a globe that will have Africa noticeably larger than the other continents. The idea will be to encourage the curiosity of children and adults who come in.
How will you use community members’ voices to inform your plan?
Here is an example
The intervention plan for executing this after school program would be to first hear the student’s voice about what they would like to be seen in the after school programs as far as what topics to discuss, what activities to do, and maybe even field trips if possible. By giving them a chance of having a say so in what could happen in the program would give them a sense of eagerness to begin and to be excited to be participating in the program. The program and its activities would be centered on helping and teaching the students on how to make better choices in life, how to properly deal with emotions, building potential career goals, as well as finding after school jobs for the high school aged students since most of them prefer to have a job to make their own money which would also teach them how to have responsibilities as well as accountability. This plan would also be incorporated with the Department of Juvenile Justice by making the students who have legal troubles to attend this after school program as an alternative to either jail time or community service.
Describe your intervention plan.
Here is an example
When collecting data, the best way to go about this is to do questionnaires to the community and the members. Providing questionnaires to each individual will allow them to give suggestions on what they prefer, allow us to learn about each person, and be able to consider and provide new ideas. Also, through observations we will be able to collect data on how to go about planning this organization. Observing body language, attitudes and the person overall will allow us to see if they are interested in being a part of this organization to be a better person and be successful. To know that we will be successful will by gaining positive feedback from the young adolescents apart of Purple Hearts with purpose, seeing that they are using the life skills they’ve learned, them choosing to attend college, trade school or on their way to create their business. Seeing each of the adolescents follow through and complete what their purpose is in life. Also, seeing them have fun and see the community being so active in every individual’s life from this non-profit. In conclusion the Purple Hearts wit purpose it to help and be of service to any adolescents of the ages of 12 years old to the age of 17 years old. Providing knowledge on various life topics and lessons.
We want to be able to prepare them to be a successful individual no matter the advocate.
Explain who will implement the community action plan: staffing: community employees/supporters/volunteers.
Here is an example!
The people that will play a key role in implementing this life skills community action plan for the homeless are the numerous housing programs case managers/social workers, the community’s volunteers, the life skills teachers, a program manager, and admissions specialists. To begin implementing the life enrichment program I would have to advocate for this idea in the community and plan to speak with the directors at the community centers. With the communities support and an ok from community centers to operate on their premises, I would need to talk to
LIFE ENRICHMENT 5the directors of the different housing resources in Atlanta. If they agreed to work with my program and send their clients to us the next step in the plan would be to hold a meeting with the case managers of the various housing programs to tell them the details of our program. The case managers would be a big part of getting the clients into the classes because they are the people that meet the clients first. I would also have to put out flyers in the community and posts on social media to find volunteers and teachers for the program. The staff that would be recruited for this program includes two licensed social workers to be a bridge between the program and community, intake specialists, a program manager, multiple instructors to work with the clients, an accountant, and a number of volunteers to fill in any gaps.
The social workers will provide support services and will be a part of the evaluation process. The main role of the social workers is to provide a link between the need of the client and the program. If the social worker feels that an individual may need more assistance than the program can give them then they will refer the client to other appropriate services that can also help. The intake specialists are trained and responsible for introducing each young adult to the program and providing them with information on our needs assessment and how to complete one. The program manager will run the classes on a day to day basis and make sure everything runs smoothly. The class instructors will be responsible for making sure each life skill class that is taught is taught in a way that reaches every young adult. The accountant would be over all of the funding for the program and would make sure we keep up compliance to keep any grants. The volunteers will take on help roles at fundraisers, help with classes, and any other services needed.

What is your plan for evaluation? How will you collect the necessary data?
Develop Measurable Objectives for Your Outcomes – Conduct weigh-ins at the beginning and end of the program. Conduct food-choice surveys at the beginning and end of the program. Create an Evaluation Plan: Process Evaluation: Questions and Evaluations to measure if individuals’ physical activities have increased and/or eating habits have changed. Outcome Evaluation: Weigh-ins and impact/satisfaction surveys will be conducted at the end of the program. Successful execution of the program will be characterized by data collection results to verify if individuals are more physically active and if obesity has been reduced in minority youth and communities. (National Network, n.d.).
How will you know if you have been successful?
Over the course of a six-month period we hope to have educated young adults with the proper procedures and knowledge to obey the law as well as knowing it. It hoped that the conviction rates of minors are decreased as well as the recidivism rates. This community action plan will not only help the community but those in the surrounding areas as well. We want to give people a fighting chance when confronting the justice system. It is hope that members of this program not only see that they can but believe that they can as well.
