CASE CHALLENGE 

Mrs. Smith, a widow, is 76 years old. She is 5′3” tall and weighs 150 lbs. She has arthritis in her knees and hands which limit her mobility. She does not drive and there is no grocery store within walking distance of her home. She takes aspirin or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents. She lives on a small pension and Social Security. Last month, her granddaughter Sarah (age 35, 12-weeks pregnant) moved in with children Charles (age 15) and Chelsea (age 4) while Sarah’s husband is on overseas military duty. The family will be coming to your office for nutrition counseling. 

CASE ANALYSIS 

1. Sarah comes to your office for nutrition counseling. She admits she was not very aware of her diet during her other pregnancies and wants to be more informed during this pregnancy. What are some key nutrition education and counseling strategies you may want to incorporate in your first session? 

2. What socioeconomic, physiologic, and lifestyle factors influence Mrs. Smith’s food intake? What are two key nutrition issues you might discuss with Mrs. Smith during your first session? 

3. Which education and counseling strategies would you consider using when working with Chelsea and her family? 

4. What specific education and counseling strategies would you consider using when working with Charles? 

5. Make a list of potential challenges and opportunities in providing nutrition counseling to Mrs. Smith and her extended family. 

6. Develop written documentation for each client session of the family unit incorporating the Nutrition Care Process model as applicable.
