and ranges from personal satisfaction to
improved patient care. Once you know
why you should get certified in your
specialty, you’ll want to know how to do
so. Here’s a closer look at both “why”
and “how.”

recognizes your skills and expertise, and
may boost your self-confidence and
enhance patient care.
Professionalism
Specialty certification by a recognized
nursing organization supports and
validates the nursing profession and your
own professionalism. You’re already an
autonomous professional; you have a
nursing degree, use critical-thinking skills
and the nursing process, and are
accountable for your own actions.
Certification validates that experience,
elevates the profession, and confirms
your commitment.
Financial benefits
Many organizations provide a financial
reward or benefit for attaining nursing
specialty certification. Some will pay for
the exam, courses, or materials that you
need to prepare for certification, and
others provide onsite certification review
courses. According to a 2018 survey,
nurses certified in their specialty earn
23% more on average than their
noncertified coworkers.
Job opportunities
Nursing specialty certification can
provide opportunities for advancement
and differentiate you from others seeking
the same position you are. Many
organizations use nursing specialty
certification as criteria for a clinical ladder

program or for promotion. Others have
policies that require certification for
performing certain skills. In some
facilities, for example, oncology nurses
have to be certified before they can
administer chemo-therapeutic agents.
Recognition
Many organizations formally recognize
nurses who attain specialty certification.
They might hold annual certification
breakfasts, include certification
identification on nurses’ name badges,
distribute annual certification bonuses,
present congratulatory certificates or
memos from nursing administration, or
announce newly achieved certifications
in organization or department
newsletters. One organization displayed
a poster-sized photo of a nurse who
earned certification, and another
produced a video of a recently certified
nurse to recognize the nurse and
encourage others to seek certification.
Self-confidence boost
Some research has shown that
certification may boost your
self-confidence and feelings of
competency, which may decrease
turnover, positively impact patient care,
and increase patient satisfaction.
Although more research is needed, in a
literature review that was part of a 2017
article, Boyle noted that several studies
have found that certification improves
certain patient outcomes.

How to become certified
With more than 180 nursing specialty
certifications to choose from, start with
some self-reflection and research. What
areas of nursing are you drawn to, what
are your strengths and weaknesses, and
where do you have the most experience?
Most certifying bodies require successful
completion of an exam to obtain initial
nursing certification, and then continuing
education to renew the certification. (See
Tips to prepare for the certification
exam.) Are you ready to sit for such an
exam or do you need more experience
and education in your specialty of
interest? The eligibility requirements for
specific specialty certifications can help
you decide.
Depending on the type of certification
you’re seeking, eligibility may include a
certain number of years of practice in the
specialty area and educational
preparation (some certifying bodies
require a minimum of a baccalaureate
degree). You can learn more by visiting
websites of organizations that provide
certifications you’re interested in. For
example, requirements for certifications
offered by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center can be found at
nursingworld.org/ certification.
Take the next step
Certification not only benefits you, it also
benefits the organization you work for.
Your certification can help the
organization differentiate itself from

others and demonstrate that they have
skilled and experienced nursing
professionals. This is a win-win-win for
the nurse, the patient, and the
organization.
Pursuing and attaining a nursing
specialty certification is a personal
accomplishment and a professional
success. It displays your commitment to
nursing, can help you move forward in
your career, and promotes nursing as a
profession. When you determine that
you’re ready to pursue nursing specialty
certification, don’t hesitate to take the
next step.
Tips to prepare for the certification
exam
Taking a certification exam can be
daunting, but these strategies can help
reduce the stress.
● Identify your support
system. This could include
others interested in becoming
certified (so that you can form
a study group), and friends
and family who could pick up
extra chores to help free up
time for you to prepare.
● Rethink your priorities.
Move certification up on your
list of priorities. Consider what
you can let go of temporarily.
For example, maybe you can
opt out of participating in your
https://web-a-ebscohost-com.chamberlainuniversity.idm.oclc.org/ehost/detail/detail?vid=0&sid=8064079b-f674-46ce-b483-88a7fd966cff%40sessionmgr4007&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#toc

monthly book group until after
you’ve taken the exam.
● Review what you’ll be
tested on to identify your
strengths and weaknesses.
Most certifying bodies have a
core curriculum that outlines
what you’re expected to know.
Focus on your weaknesses
rather than taking time to
review information you’re
already confident in.
● Establish a plan of study
and commit to it. Schedule a
set amount of time each week
in your calendar. If you feel
you need extra help, consider
hiring a tutor or taking a
review course.
● Take advantage of
resources. For example, the
American Academy of
Medical-Surgical Nurses
offers a book of sample
questions. Consider splitting
the costs among several
nurses interested in becoming
certified.
● Review test-taking tips. See
“Use your critical thinking
skills to ace your next exam”
at americannursetoday.com/
test-taking-tips.
● Get a good night’s sleep the
day before the test. You’ll do
better on the exam if you’re
well rested.
Keep in mind that nurses typically cite
lack of time as a primary barrier to
pursuing certification, but if you’re
committed, you can take steps to find the
time.

Why should you pursue nursing certification? The answer is multifaceted and ranges from
personal satisfaction to improved patient care. Once you know why you should get certified in
your specialty, you’ll want to know how to do so. Here’s a closer look at both “why” and “how.”

Certification supports nursing professionalism, provides financial benefits, expands your job
opportunities, recognizes your skills and expertise, and may boost your self-confidence and
enhance patient care.
Professionalism
Specialty certification by a recognized nursing organization supports and validates the nursing
profession and your own professionalism. You’re already an autonomous professional; you have
a nursing degree, use critical-thinking skills and the nursing process, and are accountable for
your own actions. Certification validates that experience, elevates the profession, and confirms
your commitment.
Financial benefits
Many organizations provide a financial reward or benefit for attaining nursing specialty
certification. Some will pay for the exam, courses, or materials that you need to prepare for
certification, and others provide onsite certification review courses. According to a 2018 survey,
nurses certified in their specialty earn 23% more on average than their noncertified coworkers.
Job opportunities
Nursing specialty certification can provide opportunities for advancement and differentiate you
from others seeking the same position you are. Many organizations use nursing specialty
certification as criteria for a clinical ladder program or for promotion. Others have policies that

require certification for performing certain skills. In some facilities, for example, oncology nurses
have to be certified before they can administer chemo-therapeutic agents.
Recognition
Many organizations formally recognize nurses who attain specialty certification. They might hold
annual certification breakfasts, include certification identification on nurses’ name badges,
distribute annual certification bonuses, present congratulatory certificates or memos from
nursing administration, or announce newly achieved certifications in organization or department
newsletters. One organization displayed a poster-sized photo of a nurse who earned
certification, and another produced a video of a recently certified nurse to recognize the nurse
and encourage others to seek certification.
Self-confidence boost
Some research has shown that certification may boost your self-confidence and feelings of
competency, which may decrease turnover, positively impact patient care, and increase patient
satisfaction. Although more research is needed, in a literature review that was part of a 2017
article, Boyle noted that several studies have found that certification improves certain patient
outcomes.

With more than 180 nursing specialty certifications to choose from, start with some
self-reflection and research. What areas of nursing are you drawn to, what are your strengths
and weaknesses, and where do you have the most experience?
Most certifying bodies require successful completion of an exam to obtain initial nursing
certification, and then continuing education to renew the certification. (See Tips to prepare for
the certification exam.) Are you ready to sit for such an exam or do you need more experience
and education in your specialty of interest? The eligibility requirements for specific specialty
certifications can help you decide.
Depending on the type of certification you’re seeking, eligibility may include a certain number of
years of practice in the specialty area and educational preparation (some certifying bodies
require a minimum of a baccalaureate degree). You can learn more by visiting websites of
organizations that provide certifications you’re interested in. For example, requirements for
certifications offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center can be found at
nursingworld.org/ certification.
Take the next step
Certification not only benefits you, it also benefits the organization you work for. Your
certification can help the organization differentiate itself from others and demonstrate that they
have skilled and experienced nursing professionals. This is a win-win-win for the nurse, the
patient, and the organization.
Pursuing and attaining a nursing specialty certification is a personal accomplishment and a
professional success. It displays your commitment to nursing, can help you move forward in

your career, and promotes nursing as a profession. When you determine that you’re ready to
pursue nursing specialty certification, don’t hesitate to take the next step.
Tips to prepare for the certification exam
Taking a certification exam can be daunting, but these strategies can help reduce the stress.
● Identify your support system. This could include others interested in becoming
certified (so that you can form a study group), and friends and family who could pick
up extra chores to help free up time for you to prepare.
● Rethink your priorities. Move certification up on your list of priorities. Consider what
you can let go of temporarily. For example, maybe you can opt out of participating in
your monthly book group until after you’ve taken the exam.
● Review what you’ll be tested on to identify your strengths and weaknesses.
Most certifying bodies have a core curriculum that outlines what you’re expected to
know. Focus on your weaknesses rather than taking time to review information you’re
already confident in.
● Establish a plan of study and commit to it. Schedule a set amount of time each
week in your calendar. If you feel you need extra help, consider hiring a tutor or
taking a review course.
● Take advantage of resources. For example, the American Academy of
Medical-Surgical Nurses offers a book of sample questions. Consider splitting the
costs among several nurses interested in becoming certified.
● Review test-taking tips. See “Use your critical thinking skills to ace your next exam”
at americannursetoday.com/ test-taking-tips.
● Get a good night’s sleep the day before the test. You’ll do better on the exam if
you’re well rested.

Keep in mind that nurses typically cite lack of time as a primary barrier to pursuing certification,
but if you’re committed, you can take steps to find the time.

Assigned Article Summary
Certification in a nursing career is quite crucial. While the process may seem complicated and a limiting step to the individual nurse graduates and others, it presents one with many benefits that not only upholds its importance but validates its necessity. Being certified upholds professionalism in nursing by recognizing that a nurse has acquired a nursing degree, can use critical thinking a nursing theory to handle case problems, their commitment to the service and readiness to take accountability of their actions. While organizations provide financial incentives certified nurses in efforts of attracting nursing specialty certification, studies show that on average, certified nurses are paid more by 23% compared to their uncertified counterparts. This nullifies the cost incurred when paying for the certification examinations, courses or preparation materials.
In addition, having a professional certificate presents one as unique and stands a better chance of getting employed and promotion rewards as it makes you different from others. Besides, organizations have set honorary for nurses with specialty certification. Some offer breakfast, other recognition of certification on badges, award congratulatory certificates, appear in newsletters, and get poster-sized photos and videos of certification nurses which acts as an encouragement to other uncertified professionals. Certification helps to build competence and self-confidence decreasing the likelihood of turnovers, impacting positively on patient care, and increasing both patient and nurse satisfaction. These benefits make the certification necessary for a nurse as an individual.
Nurses have a wide variety of specialties for certification, typically more than 180. The process of certification begins with reflecting on the field of interest. After settling on a specific specialty, arrangements are made to take up examinations after ascertaining that they qualify for the process. For complete preparation for the exam, one can have additional education sessions or peer revision groups. This will help one to remember what is required of them as well as using the prepared curriculum to culminate the obtained knowledge for better exam performance.
Impact on Future Practice Assigned Article
The certification process described in this article is quite instrumental in the future nursing career. New members in the profession are faced with difficulties in drawing certification meaning and executing the process. The benefits and importance of being certified outlined in the article act as an informant and encouragement. Nurses will be able to visualize and way out the benefits they have as certified professionals versus when uncertified. Besides, it helps one learn that getting specialty specifications is not only a personal growth and career development but also a win-win affair for the nurse, patient, and the organization. While nurses have an individual gain of ascertaining their validity and experience, it earns them trust not only from the organization but also from the patient. Nursing career and profession filled with certified staff are likely to promote patient care quality as patients feel they are being attended to by legitimate staff and hence better services. It will lead to the creation of a field that is governed by confidence and result in better care outcomes.
Conclusion
Certification in nursing career presents many benefits to both the individual nurse, the organization, and the patient. However, most of the advantages are enjoyed by the certified nurse. While certification upholds professionalism, it comes along with associated costs that limit the acquisition of the certificate. The incentives obtained from certification including the building of confidence in the nurse, increasing patient trust in the employees and hospitals as well as standing a better chance for opportunities like promotion and high ascertains its need. With good preparation to take up the certification process, it can help remove the fears from uncertified nurses as they become confident to face the exams.

Collaboration with other healthcare disciplines promotes safety and patient centered care. Resilience can indirectly promote safety and patient centered care by allowing healthcare workers to focus on their positive emotions. Often healthcare providers become discouraged from a continuous balance between life and work stressors. This can cause the healthcare professional to experience negative feelings toward their workplace and can overall delay patient care. The article highlights interventions that can be used to enhance resilience such as, making boards that encourage other healthcare disciplines with kind words on a sticky note. The article stated, “Building resilience is an ongoing process, and we’ve continued to develop ways to enhance positivity in the workplace.” (Hicks, T. P., Sullivan, M., Sexton, J. B., & Adair, K. C. (2019) Positive reinforcement in a workplace can positively impact a professional’s work ethic by acknowledging their hard work and contributions. Quality outcomes are predisposed by resilience through positive reinforcement tools that promotes providing optimal patient care.
The work environment at times can be very stringent and professionals are asked to do so much that resilience interventions can be extremely uplifting and helpful. The Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety, an organization that created tools influencing resilience in the workplace, recruited different interdisciplinary team members to practice these tactics at the workplace. Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety “creates a common language for communicating patient safety concerns, encourages a flat organizational structure so all team members feel comfortable speaking up for safety, and enhances teamwork….”( Hicks, T. P., Sullivan, M., Sexton, J. B., & Adair, K. C. (2019)By building rapport and getting to know the other healthcare personnel that you work. Resilience activities while collaborating with other team member can cause healthcare workers to have a positive outlook about work integrity.
Therefore, resilience can indirectly promote quality outcomes like patient safety by allowing healthcare workers to focus on their positive emotions.
Impact of Assigned Article Content on Future Practice
This article positively influences healthcare disciplines to promote positive attitudes toward providing care. Using the activities Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety created, can help recognize that all healthcare staff are working toward common goal and recognizing each other’s positive and virtuous characteristics. This will positively affect the future of my nursing practice by helping to balance the negative stressors with different approaches of positive reinforcement. This will include seeking other staff members constructive qualities and building rapport to enhance my forthcoming practice. Work can be considered overwhelming due to the large workload in small time periods. Another technique that will overall advance my future practice is managing time better by providing myself with enough time for my personal well being such as, adequate rest periods and mealtimes, to progressively stimulate encouraging emotions.
