When examining photography today, it is intriguing to see just how dynamic and detailed pictures have become, cameras have evolved so much that we now have so many options to choose from. Such as lens sizes, digital, polaroid’s, and even now our smart phones are capable of capturing panoramic views and a multitude of editing options. With this major evolution of photography, it is easy to see how it quickly became an art, and people grasped onto it and want to make their own version or style of the skill.
My inspiration piece for this topic was done by David Doubilet, the photo is known as the circle of barracuda, and the photo was taken in 2008, this photo depicts a school of barracuda circling as a defense mechanism in response to any threatening species. The photo was taken in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea. Being that photography was initially used for taking pictures of people and then eventually landscapes, animals and so forth, it is fascinating to me that we have people who want and strive to show us more. In this case, Doubilet’s mission was to showcase the beauty of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it, as he has done so with many of his photographs. In an article by national geographic they give a great explanation of his work and passion, “Pioneering underwater photographer David Doubilet—whose first photo was published in National Geographic in 1972—has dedicated his life to capturing the action, drama, and poetry of our oceans and bringing those images back to the surface for those of us who might never see those sights with our own eyes.” (National Geographic, 2008.)
The photo I chose to include as an inspiration to his piece is called The Majestic Tarpon, this photo was absolutely beautiful to capture and is one of my favorites. It was taken in Islamorada, in the Florida keys, in the photo the tarpon is eating a fish that was dropped into the water, the back story of this photo is that there is a restaurant in Islamorada where hundreds of tarpon come every day to be fed by restaurant customers and tourists. According to locals it first started when an injured tarpon was by the docks of the restaurant, a worker chose to get the fish out of the water and nurse it back to health in one of the many large tanks they have at the seafood restaurant. This is also due to the fact that no one really eats tarpon. After the fish healed, they released it back into the ocean. Every day it would come back for food and eventually more and more would come each day. What’s amazing to me is that these fish look so huge and scary, they can reach up to 8 feet long and weigh close to 280 pounds, but they are not predators at all. They feed on small bait fish, and some men were sticking their whole arms in their mouths because they have minimal teeth and large mouths and throats. They are truly amazing, and beautiful.
Being that the circle of barracuda photo was underwater, I tried to connect this photo due to the theme of it being related to the ocean, and the creatures we find there, how each species and landscape can harbor a deeper connection and meaning to the person behind the camera. Similarities include subject matter, such as the ocean and fish, although it is not the same species. Differences include the inspiration photo being taken underwater, whereas mine was not under the water, location of the photos was also different, and of course the clarity of the inspiration photo is much better in comparison to the action and movement of mine. I would say that they are of the same medium being that they are both digital photos, the mechanism or equipment obviously differs but with digital photography many things can be altered and changed to create different affects. According to the text, “Because digital images can be altered almost infinitely, fine-art photographers have largely abandoned the principles of printing only what the camera sees. In some cases, a single image can be the product of dozens of photographs, all layered together to produce an image that might be impossible in real life.” (Martin, 2018.) When comparing the two photos and thinking about formal elements it is easy to see how the circle of barracuda is easily depicted as art, the photo has a consistent range of color and shape with the circle, and the form is presented well with the sun casting a dark shadow of the diver and fish. Whereas in my photo the color range is consistent, but the clarity and form are not with the amount of action in the photo.
