COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE PROJECT & RUBRIC
OBJECTIVE: There are a variety of community-based treatment settings in which psychiatric-
mental health nurses practice. The Community Experience Project serves to provide students
with the opportunity to compare psychiatric services and identify nursing roles, responsibilities,
and activities in the community setting. Examples of in-person community experiences include:
– 12 step programs, such as Alcoholic Anonymous (AA); Cocaine Anonymous (CA);
Narcotic Anonymous (NA); Emotional Anonymous (EA) or Overeater Anonymous
(OA).
– Mental health court (LPS Conservatorship hearing and Writ of Habeas Corpus
(Latin for “present in the body”), which must be granted to anyone on a 14-day
hold or a 30-day hold upon request by the patient.
– Self-help/support groups, psychiatric adult day care settings, partial
hospitalization programs, and school counseling centers.
Ideally, students would be in the community setting, providing an in-person experience.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many challenges, changes, and social
distancing requirements and recommendations. This project will be completed virtually;
ONLINE ONLY. It is noted that due to the pandemic and limited resources, currently, many
organizations/sites are not allowing students needing to fulfill a course requirement to attend
meetings. Therefore, assignment requirements have been modified. The assignment must
earn 76% by the grading rubric and meet the requirements of the specific criteria on the
Clinical Evaluation Tool. The report must follow the criteria on the Community Experience
Rubric and also include a personal reflection and brief summary of what was learned during
the community experience. In addition, you will include discussion of the nurse’s role as a
positive role model in the mental health community setting, and the nursing process within
the community setting. The report must be in APA format, be 800 – 1,000 words in
length, and is due in week 8.

INSTRUCTIONS: What if you were a patient in the local Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan
area, diagnosed with a mental illness, or currently going through various challenges due to
COVID-19? Would you be able to easily find help? Would you know where to start? For this
project, imagine you are a mental health nurse in your community, volunteering during the
COVID relief efforts. Although, as a nurse, you have excellent therapeutic communication
skills, and are a skilled active listener, you realize that you cannot provide all of the necessary
help for the many people affected by the pandemic.
PART I. To better understand and experience the support group setting, first, attend (4 total)
support group meetings hosted by WEconnect Recovery at
https://www.weconnectrecovery.com/free-online-support-meetings. Choose:
– 2 of the daily recovery meetings
– 1 daily meeting for family and loved ones
– 1 LGBTQIA+ or Womxn* meeting
You will need to provide meeting verification, which will be emailed to you upon request.

PART II. Now, you are tasked with locating mental health community resources for
those in need, and you have decided to make handouts/pamphlets and a blog for the
community. Keep in mind, that not everyone has access to a mobile phone, the internet, a
computer, or a car. Your instructor will assign each student a diagnoses. You are to
address the following questions/rubric criteria.
1. Give a general background summary on the diagnosis. DSM-5 criteria? How many
persons are affected (prevalence)? Who is most affected (demographics)? Treatment
options? Suicide risk? Cyclical, chronic, debilitating?
2. For the diagnosis, you must find 6 total resources (try to find free / low cost options):
a. 2 in person support group options (for the patient)
b. 2 telephone/video support options (for the patient)
c. 1 in person support option (for family/loved ones)
d. 1 telephone/video support option (for family/loved ones)
3. For each resource option, you must note:
a. Name and purpose of the supporting organization
i. population served and types of health concerns addressed
ii. professional services offered (social services, housing assistance, referrals,
etc.) and how the organization communicates with the community (website,
blog, social media, email, etc.)
b. Contact information (website, physical address, email address, phone, etc.)
c. Support group availability (meeting dates, times, method, costs, etc.)
d. Use internet search, google earth, local transit information, etc. to get an overview
of the in person group meeting location. Is the location easily accessible for those
without transportation or with disabilities? Do you have any geographical, safety,
or other concerns?
The typewritten report must follow the criteria on the rubric and also include a personal
reflection and brief summary of what was learned during the community experience. APA
format should be followed, including reference/resource citations. In addition, include
discussions of how the nurse could serve as a positive role model and discuss the nursing process
within the community setting. You should specifically detail activities
experienced during the
online support group meetings.
Other questions to address: How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected management of the
diagnosis? Did you have difficulties finding resources, signing up for meetings, getting contact
information, etc? What program changes might better serve the community? Are there any
resources for those with disabilities, such as hearing/sight impaired? What resources are
available for those who do not speak English? Nonverbal persons? Persons with developmental
disabilities? Low income persons? Children?
