Each week you will listen to the lecture(s) for the week and then write an initial post here that translates a key concept from the lecture into your own words, giving your own example to illustrate your understanding of the idea. You want to demonstrate what you learned from the lecture here, so be sure to write both specifically and with some depth in order to illustrate what you learned. Symbolic interactionism is all about how people view and define themselves. In each aspect of our life, we behave differently. Goffman, the man who made this idea famous within sociology, came up with the idea of the “dramaturgical approach.” This means that we as humans are “performing” our identity and that identity shifts as our social context shifts. For example, when we are enjoying ourselves with friends versus attending a funeral, we present ourselves differently. He argued that humans have a “front stage” self which is the one we present to the world, but we also have a “backstage” self which is when we are with loved ones or feel comfortable. Impression management is an idea within symbolic interactionism that basically describes the human’s desire to control how others perceive them.

Besides eugenics, what is another example of social constructionism and do you think it came about through a belief or a social intuition’s commitment to it?

Symbolic interactionism is a key concept from the lecture that describes how an individual interacts and makes sense of the world around them. It is a very cultural approach to understanding society and observes the symbology of how individuals interact and give meaning to each other and their lives.

Values and beliefs present deeper social structures in societies and guide us to understand them, as well into fit into specific roles in them. People assume different roles and behaviors depending on the social structure and situation. These roles come with different approaches and social scripts that one uses as a behavioral guideline. For example, while in school, someone who assumes the role of a student will also assume the role of behaving like one. However, the student might only assume that role while on campus or studying, and assume a different role in a different social situation, such as the role of an athlete while rock climbing or the role of an older sibling while around family. This can be positive or negative, and when the association of the role is negative it is a social stigma.

What can be done to help eliminate negative social stigma like people who have been prison and have been released, or is it even possible?
