Purpose: This assignment is designed for students to understand elements of culture, to illustrate the differences between cultures, and to understand the socialization and resocialization process.

Task: Students will need to:

• Students will need to respond to the following questions below using complete sentences, complete explanations to the questions, and when providing examples from the film–examples need to be thorough.

An example of the “Lost Boys” experiencing culture shock, was when they were trying to get on the escalator, they were not quite sure how to get on and off–some of boys stumbled.  This would be culture shock because the “Lost Boys” experienced a sense of disorientation from what they would consider a norm from their country.  This was probably the first time any of the “Lost Boys” have ridden and/or seen an escalator.–do not use this example). 

Questions:

1. Explain how ethnocentrism (make sure to define this sociological concept in your response) could contribute to the conflict/war in Sudan based off of the information from the film.
2. What were some differences, culturally; you noticed in the film between the U.S. culture and the Southern Sudanese culture (Lost Boys)—make sure to provide specific examples from the film of the cultural differences.
3. Provide some specific examples from the film as to how the Sudanese Lost Boys were resocialized to U.S. culture.
4. Why do you think John Bul Dau stressed the importance of the younger Sudanese generation staying in touch with their Dinka culture?  
5. What do you think John Bul Dau meant by the following quote “a man without culture is like a man without land”? 
6.
