Creating a community garden

Introduction

A community garden is a single piece of land gardened together by individuals. Community gardens make use of people or shared plots on private or public land while producing fruits, vegetables and plants grown for their appealing look. All over the globe community gardens can satisfy various importance such as aesthetic and community improvement, physical or mental wellbeing and land conversation. Creation of a community garden is required do to several reasons. Additionally, its creation requires several components to be available for it to be successful.

Discussion

Community gardens are required due to the fact that there is too much food insecurity in the country. Most households do not have sufficient access to essential nutrients due to inadequate incomes. Food insecurity is a real issue in the country and has great impact to the health costs. Creation of community gardens will help solve this issue since it aids by making sure that that healthy foods is available to the citizens. Thus the number of hungry families, obese individuals and malnourished kids is minimized.

Additionally, there is excess air pollution in the environment. There is high concentration of dangerous gases and particles in the air that negatively impacts the health of humans, animals and plans. It as well causes temperatures to rise thus triggering climate change. The main causes of air pollution are industrial human activities such as combustion of greenhouse gases, release of toxic chemicals and particles in the air. Community gardening will help reduce this since the plants act as purification system of taking in airborne chemicals and releasing oxygen which is essential for human lives (Tresch, Frey & Morreti). The plants reduce the carbon dioxide and clean the environment.

Similarly, there is too much erosion, which damages the surface of the earth. For instance, if there is flowing water, the water damages the surface and soil will be eroded with time. This is mainly caused by deforestation, climate change and other human activities. Soil erosion causes low crop production thus causing famine and hunger in the country. Community gardening can help reduce soil erosion since the roots of the plants will hold the surface firmly in place. Which will help to reduce erosion. Additionally, there is also too much noise pollution in the environment. This noise originates from the machines in the production industries. Trees aid in absorbing the noise thus creating a great noise barrier (DeMuro, 2013).

For an effective community garden, one requires a convenient site. This is the most important component of starting a community garden. The piece of land should not be used for anything else; it should have access to plenty of sunshine; should be flat; have a source of water and should not have large or heavy pieces of debris. One should as well consider the budget of coming up with the garden. On the issue of budget one should consider the cost of labor, leasing the land, buying seeds, tools, fertilizers and other garden requirements. The individuals should as well set rules. These will make sure that they those involved identify what is expected of them (American Community Gardening Association, n.d.).

Conclusion

Considering the issues affecting the environment and individuals such as hunger, soil erosion, noise pollution and air pollution, the creation of a community garden is very essential. This is because it will help provide food, create a barrier to soil erosion as well as to noise. The benefits of a community garden extends to the gardeners as well as to the whole community. This makes the efforts involved in establishing the community garden worth. Additionally when addressing the creation of a greenhouse one should consider the land, budget and the rules that will maintain discipline in the program.
