The topic to be discussed in this paper is mental illness. Mental illness can be defined as a pattern that results in impairment or distress in the functioning of an individual. Mental illness results in changes in behavior, emotions, and also affects individual thinking. The problem has been receiving attention from health professionals.
Mental illness in the community has affected people regardless of their gender, ethnicity, age, social status, background or cultural orientation. However, most of the affected persons in the region are men who are above the age of 24 years. In most cases, the affected are married men.
There are many factors associated with the problem of mental illness. The major cause is psychological factors. Most of the affected persons especially, are seen to be in the healing process of past experienced or a traumatic incident (Keyes, 2019). For instance, 3 out of 5 men with the condition are divorced, suffering from domestic abuse, or have lost their loved ones. Their emotions have been affected by influencing their mental health.
Another major cause is the environment and social factors. Most of the victims have issues with their communities or the families they live with. The victims have challenges in their status of employment and also pressures from work. Some of the factors attributed to this include poverty, unemployment, and unfavorable working environment.
Another major cause is physical causes. The type of lifestyle for an individual can expose them to mental illness. Some of the physical reasons include substance abuse or deficiency in vital body requirements, such as minerals. Other factors that seemed to have caused mental illness include family history, childhood abuse, discrimination, sexual abuse, trauma, and debts, among others.
Mental illness can be handled using the entire three service delivery models. Public health ode can be used to address the issue of mental illness. This model will help in examining the reasons for mental illness, work on improving the health of the community, and finally educate individuals on how they can prevent the disease (Brezina, 2018). The model will advise people on how to promote mental health as well as how to handle those affected. The medical model can be used to treat an individual who is suffering from mental illness. The medical model will diagnose the patient, identify the symptoms, and offer the treatment. The medical model will require the patient to visit the physician to get treated.
The human service model will be more of a preventative measure. This is because the model will engage both the victims and the surroundings. The individual will be educated on how to prevent mental illness as well as take care of the environment that breeds the factors causing the illness. This will deal with issues domestic violence, drugs, abuse, among other factors that originate from the environment.
