In this last section of the course we have put our attention towards Indian Removal, The Mexican-American War, Civil War Events and Reconstruction, in addition to required readings chapter 7, 8, 9 in Zinn and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl you have class notes. What I have tried to instill in my lectures are personal reactions of events, what these events meant to people on a personal level and on society in the face of the dogmatic status quo. The question for you to answer—Describe and analyze the forces that the Indians, Mexicans, slaves, free blacks, black and white abolitionist had to confront,? Tie the question into one thesis. I am definitely going to be looking for evidence to support your positions. I don’t want a “just because” approach. You have been exposed to differing interpretation of U.S. history I want to see the intellectual results.

Americas History

The establishment of America as a country came with a lot of conflicts which ranged from the relocation of the Native Indians from their territories, the creation, and abolishment of slavery and the inability of expanding the American nation into the Mexican side. Due to these reasons, there are varied historical contexts that are given on how the United States of America came to be and the challenges that it faced before it could become one under the federal government. Internal and external wars which included the trail of tears which left a lot of Indians dead, the civil war between the north and south left destruction on the southern states due to the abolitionist movement and the desire of the Confederacy to develop an independent state. The Southern states were the most culpable side because they wanted slavery to continue, expansion of the American border to the Mexican side to be initiated through military force and the Native Indians to be pushed away from their lands which were fertile for agriculture and rich in minerals.

In ensuring that the white settlers were able to have control of the American territory, they were divided amongst the northern and southern states where the north was progressive, and they were aiming at industrialization while the south wanted agriculture as their source of creating wealth. Due to these varied reasons, the institution of slavery was set where the black would work on the plantations that produced cotton and tobacco which were mainly exported to England by the southerners, and it was their source of livelihood. The buying and selling of slaves supplemented their income, and that is one of the reasons why they felt that their northern counterparts wanted them to relinquish a part of their tradition. The civil war came by wanting to eradicate slavery and make the black people free so that they could live like the rest of the Americans. President Abraham Lincoln together with his predecessor Andrew Jackson supported this initiative, and they made it mandatory that the south had to eradicate slavery for them to be allowed to join the federal government.

During that period, the Native Americans were being chased away from their land by the white settlers and in the wake of this exercise “the trial of tears” ensued which was the massive and unwarranted death of the Indians. The young and old Native Indians died in droves from hunger, weariness, diseases and cold and even death at the hands of the white supremacists who were hunting them. The “trail of tears” came to be associated with the Andrew Johnson who became the president and he supported the continuation of relocating the Native Indians and even though the Cherokees protested this forceful removal they were no match for the hunters who were killing them by the drove.

James Polk who was the 11th president of America from 1795 to 1849 initiated and supported the American expansion of the Mexican border at Texas claiming that the Rio Grande was supposed to be the original boundary while the Mexicans claimed it was the Nueces River. These variations brought the American-Mexican war which did not last long because the Americans were facing internal strife from the Indians who were being chased away from their lands. The civil strife’s in America were the same ones that were experienced during the civil war as the north overpowered the south where 620,000 people were killed in a senseless war that could have been avoided if the south had agreed to end slavery and form a federal government where the state and the government could be able to work together to form the United States of America.
