Subject Code and Name MIS500 Foundations of Information Systems

Assessment Assessment Three – Reflective Portfolio

Individual/Group Individual

Length 3000 words

Learning Outcomes This assessment addresses the following subject learning
outcomes:

d) Develop own professional practice and ethical
standards around business problems and
implementation of solutions

Submission By 11:59 PM AEST/AEDT Friday of Module 6.1 (week 11)

Weighting 40%

Total Marks 40 marks

Context:

The assessment suite in this subject is built on top of skills you are building in your learning activities

.

Although the learning activities do not carry any assessable weight by themselves, completing them
and seeking input from your peers and the learning facilitator is essential for you to achieving a
positive result in the subject. Before beginning this assessment, be sure that you have completed the
learning activities in all of the modules.

Instructions:

As you begin this subject, start and keep a learning journal that you add to during the process of
learning about the foundations of information systems. A suggested format for the learning journal
is as follows:

Date Learning Activity Impact Evidence

(You are free to have another format of your choosing, and if you do, the following comments will
need to be adjusted.)

MIS500-Assign3 Page 2 of 3

For each day in your learning journey, write the date and then the learning activity you engaged in.
Detail what impact the learning had on you and then include any evidence you might like to keep
later. This journal should be appended to this assessment when you submit it.

To do this assessment well, you will need to engage in reflective analysis. Reflection is what
happens when you are quiet and calm and have appropriate time to study and is how you
integrate the materials in this subject with what you already know. Sometimes the materials
may challenge what you already know, and at other times it may create new knowledge,
opinions or ways you will integrate into your professional practice. Reflection is not a
cursory comment about a learning activity but instead is an authentic assessment as it
involves you being vulnerable, allowing your personal beliefs and the way you perceive the
world around you to be challenged and, if necessary, changed by what you learn. An
important element of reflection is your incorporation of your belief system, your morals and
ethics as well as how you view the impact of information systems on people.

Toward the end of the trimester, take your learning journal and then build a narrative that
summarises the journey and learnings you undertook while studying this subject. You should refer
to specific journal entries and/or extracts from learning activities to demonstrate your learning. You
should refer to how you can apply the learnings in your future career or the organisation you
currently work for. Should you wish to you can focus your self reflection on one aspect of the
subject from the following topics :

– Business Intelligence and Big data

– Cybersecurity

– Agile Methods and system development

– CRM technologies

– SCM Technologies

There is no required format for the assessment. Students should use initiative and be sure to
conform to the APA referencing style, making use of external sources as appropriate.

Be sure to bookend your assignment with an introduction and conclusion. You may also like to
append your learning activities or other artefacts that demonstrate the attainment of your learning
or the ways in which the learning materials have affected you personally.

Submission Instructions:

Do not leave this assessment to the last minute!

You are expected to begin this assessment when you begin the trimester, especially as you relate the
learning activities (formative assessment) to this and the other (summative) assessments. Be sure to
keep several drafts of your work as well as your notes and any sources you used to draw on in
preparing it.

Although the journal is not part of the word count in this assessment, to get the level of richness
required, it is expected that it will be approximately twice the number of words in the assessable
component of the assessment.

MIS500-Assign3 Page 3 of 3

Be sure to build a narrative as your learning journal on its own will not be read.

Extensions will be considered only in extenuating circumstances where the student has applied
before the due date. At that point, students are required to provide the latest draft, in case the
extension is not granted.

Students are responsible for keeping appropriate back-ups and drafts of their assignments and to
submit the correct version.

Torrens University Australia policies apply to the preparation and submission of this assignment.

MODULE 6 – THE INFORMATION SYSTEMSMODULE 6 – THE INFORMATION SYSTEMS
PROFESSIONPROFESSION

Introduction

We have covered quite a lot of ground in this subject. Cast your mind back

to week 1 when we suggested that information systems are all around us

and that every day, we probably interact with several information systems

without even realising it. We contextualised information systems then as

having a business purpose and that this was the core foundation. As we

progressed, we considered the elements—the data elements—and how

they come together, imbued with meaning to become the information

that is produced by information systems. We paid particular attention to

the multitude of data that is captured and made every day and that there

is no one person in the world who could use it all; in that vein we

considered the hierarchy of data used it to derive the most valuable of all,

knowledge.

We then broke from contextualising to discussing the specific systems that

are in use in contemporary enterprises. We focused on the functional

aspects of business and illustrated with several examples how

information systems support—and even drive—the business. We

suggested that the customer is the reason for any firm to exist and that

firms need to understand their customers intimately if their business

efforts are going to remain profitable. We then moved to introducing and

overviewing the Internet and how its evolution has moved from a network

of computing systems designed to withstand a nuclear strike to one of the

most important platforms for supporting business and commerce. To that

end, we discovered business models of the imagination age and focused

11/02/20, 12’55 AMLaureate International Universities

Page 2 of 4https://laureate-au.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-8327628-dt-c…%20Information%20Systems/Web%20Content/module%2006/index.html

on how information systems has supported and driven its development to

the present moment.

Our discussion then changed gear and we moved from discussing the

many positive aspects of information systems toward an evaluation of

how things can go wrong. In that context we discussed frameworks of

information security, threats, vulnerabilities and then how we go about

protecting our informational assets. The protection of them is a fairly

important feat since there is a huge amount of effort and money gone

into establishing the informational assets initially. The key to protecting

them, however, involves less technology than it does policies and human-

oriented measures as we saw in the final discussions of module 5.

As we embark on the final module in this subject, it is important to take

stock of all you have covered in in the subject to date. It is providing a

platform to build on in the remainder of your Master or Graduate Diploma

of Information Systems. In the future, you will consider databases,

networking, systems analysis and design and requirements engineering

among other important subjects. But you also will need to work out what

sort of professional you are going to be and how you will remain

connected and sharp so that you can contribute to the profession and to

society more broadly. You see, information systems as a profession is a lot

like an accountant or a lawyer; people will come to you for advice and

your expertise. It is incumbent on you, then, to ensure you discharge your

duty to your clients and to society with integrity.

In this final module we will discuss professional ethics and the emergent

themes in the information systems field.

Learning Outcomes

Reading and studying this module and fully attempting all of the learning

activities will help you to:

11/02/20, 12’55 AMLaureate International Universities

Page 3 of 4https://laureate-au.blackboard.com/bbcswebdav/pid-8327628-dt-c…%20Information%20Systems/Web%20Content/module%2006/index.html

consider and define what is meant by ‘profession’ and synthesise

the key elements;

explain the need for continuing professional development;

argue the case for professional ethics;

discuss contemporary ethical issues concerning information

systems; and

consider and discuss contemporary and emergent issues.

In order to attain these learning outcomes, be sure to come to class (or

attend webinars when scheduled) having read the module content—

including the readings—and having made a solid attempt of the activities.

It is essential that you do this as your classes are not designed to instruct,

but to enrich your understanding of your self-directed learning through

collaborative exercises, getting formative feedback and challenging your

assumptions. You should come to class (or the webinars) fully prepared to

contribute to the learning of others as well. You should discuss this

approach with the learning facilitator if you’re unsure.

Contents in the Module

There are two parts to this module, 6.1 and 6.2. In the first part we posit

your future as an information systems professional and the need for

ongoing development and ethical compliance. In the second half, we

consider the emerging themes and technologies that will continue to

ensure this field of information is as exciting as ever and will keep you

interested, entertained and employed.
