45 Then he made his disciples get into the boat

and precede him to the other side toward Bethsaida,

while he dismissed the crowd.

46 And when he had taken leave of them,

he went off to the mountain to pray.

47 When it was evening,

the boat was far out on the sea and

he was alone on shore.

48 Then he saw

that they were tossed about while rowing,

for the wind was against them.

About the fourth watch of the night,

he came toward them walking on the sea.

He meant to pass by them.

49 But when they saw him walking on the sea,

they thought it was a ghost and cried out.

50They had all seen him

and were terrified.

But at once he spoke with them,

“Take courage, it is I, do not be afraid!”

51 He got into the boat with them and the wind died down.

They were [completely] astounded.

52 They had not understood the incident of the loaves.

On the contrary, their hearts were hardened.

23 After doing so,

he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.

When it was evening

he was there alone.

24 Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore,

was being tossed about by the waves,

for the wind was against it.

25 During the fourth watch of the night,

he came toward them, walking on the sea.

26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea

they were terrified.

“It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear.

27 At once [Jesus] spoke to them,

“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

28 Peter said to him in reply,

“Lord, if it is you,

command me to come to you on the water.”

29 He said, “Come.”

Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.

30 But when he saw how [strong] the wind was

he became frightened;

and, beginning to sink,

he cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand

and caught him,

and said to him,

“O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

32 After they got into the boat, the wind died down.

33 Those who were in the boat did him homage,

saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John

and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.

And he was transfigured before them,

3 and his clothes became dazzling white,

such as no fuller on earth could bleach them.

4 Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses,

and they were conversing with Jesus.

5 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,

“Rabbi, it is good that we are here!

Let us make three tents:

one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

6 He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified.

7 Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;

then from the cloud came a voice,

“This is my beloved Son.

Listen to him.”

8 Suddenly, looking around,

they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

9 As they were coming down from the mountain,

he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

10 So they kept the matter to themselves,

questioning what rising from the dead meant.

11 Then they asked him,

“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

12 He told them,

“Elijah will indeed come first and restore all things,

yet how is it written regarding the Son of Man

that he must suffer greatly and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come

and they did to him whatever they pleased,

as it is written of him.”

1 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

2 And he was transfigured before them;

his face shone like the sun

and his clothes became white as light.

3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them,

conversing with him.

4 Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,

“Lord, it is good that we are here.

If you wish, I will make three tents here,

one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

5 While he was still speaking,

behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,

then from the cloud came a voice that said,

“This is my beloved Son,

with whom I am well pleased;

listen to him.”

6 When the disciples heard this,

they fell prostrate and were very much afraid.

7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying,

“Rise, and do not be afraid.”

8 And when the disciples raised their eyes,

they saw no one else but Jesus alone.

9 As they were coming down from the mountain,

Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone

until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

10 Then the disciples asked him,

“Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

11 He said in reply,

“Elijah will indeed come and restore all things;

12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come,

and they did not recognize him

but did to him whatever they pleased.

So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands.”

13 Then the disciples understood

that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
